Judges   1

 1. Now after <0310> the death <04194> of Joshua <03091> it came

<01961> to pass, that the children <01121> of Israel <03478>

asked <07592> the LORD <03068>, saying <0559>, Who <04310> shall

go <05927> up for us against the Canaanites <03669> first

<08462>, to fight <03898> against them?

2  And the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Judah <03063> shall go

<05927> up: behold <02009>, I have delivered <05414> the land

<0776> into his hand <03027>.

3  And Judah <03063> said <0559> unto Simeon <08095> his

brother <0251>, Come <05927> up with me into my lot <01486>,

that we may fight <03898> against the Canaanites <03669>; and I

likewise <03651> will go <01980> with thee into thy lot <01486>.

So Simeon <08095> went <03212> with him.

4  And Judah <03063> went <05927> up; and the LORD <03068>

delivered <05414> the Canaanites <03669> and the Perizzites

<06522> into their hand <03027>: and they slew <05221> of them

in Bezek <0966> ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376>.

5  And they found <04672> Adonibezek <0137> in Bezek <0966>:

and they fought <03898> against him, and they slew <05221> the

Canaanites <03669> and the Perizzites <06522>.

6  But Adonibezek <0137> fled <05127>; and they pursued <07291>

after <0310> him, and caught <0270> him, and cut <07112> off his

thumbs and his great toes.

 7  And Adonibezek <0137> said <0559>, Threescore <07657> and

ten kings <04428>, having their thumbs and their great toes cut

<07112> off, gathered <03950> [their meat] under <08478> my

table <07979>: as I have done <06213>, so <03651> God <0430>

hath requited <07999> me. And they brought <0935> him to

Jerusalem <03389>, and there <08033> he died <04191>.

8  Now the children <01121> of Judah <03063> had fought <03898>

against Jerusalem <03389>, and had taken <03920> it, and smitten

<05221> it with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>, and set

<07971> the city <05892> on fire <0784>.

 9. And afterward <0310> the children <01121> of Judah <03063>

went <03381> down <03381> to fight <03898> against the

Canaanites <03669>, that dwelt <03427> in the mountain <02022>,

and in the south <05045>, and in the valley <08219>.

 10  And Judah <03063> went <03212> against <0413> the

Canaanites <03669> that dwelt <03427> in Hebron <02275>: (now

the name <08034> of Hebron <02275> before <06440> [was]

Kirjatharba <07153>:) and they slew <05221> Sheshai <08344>, and

Ahiman <0289>, and Talmai <08526>.

11  And from thence <08033> he went <03212> against <0413> the

inhabitants <03427> of Debir <01688>: and the name <08034> of

Debir <01688> before <06440> [was] Kirjathsepher <07158>:

12  And Caleb <03612> said <0559>, He that smiteth <05221>

Kirjathsepher <07158>, and taketh <03920> it, to him will I give

<05414> Achsah <05919> my daughter <01323> to wife <0802>.

13  And Othniel <06274> the son <01121> of Kenaz <07073>,

Caleb's <03612> younger <06996> brother <0251>, took <03920> it:

and he gave <05414> him Achsah <05919> his daughter <01323> to

wife <0802>.

14  And it came <01961> to pass, when she came <0935> [to him],

that she moved <05496> him to ask <07592> of her father <01> a

field <07704>: and she lighted <06795> from off <05921> [her]

ass <02543>; and Caleb <03612> said <0559> unto her, What

<04100> wilt thou?

15  And she said <0559> unto him, Give <03051> me a blessing

<01293>: for thou hast given <05414> me a south <05045> land

<0776>; give <05414> me also springs <01543> of water <04325>.

And Caleb <03612> gave <05414> her the upper <05942> springs

<01543> and the nether <08482> springs <01543>.

16  And the children <01121> of the Kenite <07017>, Moses

<04872>' father <02859> in law <02859>, went <05927> up out of

the city <05892> of palm <08558> trees with the children <01121>

of Judah <03063> into the wilderness <04057> of Judah <03063>,

which <0834> [lieth] in the south <05045> of Arad <06166>; and

they went <03212> and dwelt <03427> among <0854> the people

<05971>.

17  And Judah <03063> went <03212> with Simeon <08095> his

brother <0251>, and they slew <05221> the Canaanites <03669>

that inhabited <03427> Zephath, and utterly destroyed <02763> it.

And the name <08034> of the city <05892> was called <07121>

Hormah <02767>.

18  Also Judah <03063> took <03920> Gaza <05804> with the coast

<01366> thereof, and Askelon <0831> with the coast <01366>

thereof, and Ekron <06138> with the coast <01366> thereof.

19  And the LORD <03068> was with Judah <03063>; and he drave

<03423> out [the inhabitants of] the mountain <02022>; but could

not drive <03423> out the inhabitants <03427> of the valley

<06010>, because <03588> they had chariots <07393> of iron

<01270>.

20  And they gave <05414> Hebron <02275> unto Caleb <03612>, as

Moses <04872> said <01696>: and he expelled <03423> thence

<08033> the three <07969> sons <01121> of Anak <06061>.

 21. And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> did not drive

<03423> out the Jebusites <02983> that inhabited <03427>

Jerusalem <03389>; but the Jebusites <02983> dwell <03427> with

the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> in Jerusalem <03389>

unto this <02088> day <03117>.

22  And the house <01004> of Joseph <03130>, they also <01571>

went <05927> up against Bethel <01008>: and the LORD <03068>

[was] with them.

23  And the house <01004> of Joseph <03130> sent to descry

<08446> Bethel <01008>. (Now the name <08034> of the city

<05892> before <06440> [was] Luz <03870>.)

 24  And the spies <08104> saw <07200> a man <0376> come <03318>

forth <03318> out of the city <05892>, and they said <0559> unto

him, Shew <07200> us, we pray <04994> thee, the entrance <03996>

into the city <05892>, and we will shew <06213> thee mercy

<02617>.

25  And when he shewed <07200> them the entrance <03996> into

the city <05892>, they smote <05221> the city <05892> with the

edge <06310> of the sword <02719>; but they let go <07971> the

man <0376> and all <03605> his family <04940>.

26  And the man <0376> went <03212> into the land <0776> of the

Hittites <02850>, and built <01129> a city <05892>, and called

<07121> the name <08034> thereof Luz <03870>: which <01931> [is]

the name <08034> thereof unto this <02088> day <03117>.

27  Neither <03808> did Manasseh <04519> drive <03423> out [the

inhabitants of] Bethshean <01052> and her towns <01323>, nor

Taanach <08590> and her towns <01323>, nor the inhabitants

<03427> of Dor <01756> and her towns <01323>, nor the

inhabitants <03427> of Ibleam <02991> and her towns <01323>, nor

the inhabitants <03427> of Megiddo <04023> and her towns <01323>:

but the Canaanites <03669> would <02974> dwell <03427> in that

land <0776>.

28  And it came <01961> to pass, when Israel <03478> was strong

<02388>, that they put <07760> the Canaanites <03669> to tribute

<04522>, and did not utterly drive <03423> them out.

29  Neither <03808> did Ephraim <0669> drive <03423> out the

Canaanites <03669> that dwelt <03427> in Gezer <01507>; but the

Canaanites <03669> dwelt <03427> in Gezer <01507> among <07130>

them.

30  Neither <03808> did Zebulun <02074> drive <03423> out the

inhabitants <03427> of Kitron <07003>, nor the inhabitants

<03427> of Nahalol <05096>; but the Canaanites <03669> dwelt

<03427> among <07130> them, and became <01961> tributaries

<04522>.

31  Neither <03808> did Asher <0836> drive <03423> out the

inhabitants <03427> of Accho <05910>, nor the inhabitants

<03427> of Zidon <06721>, nor of Ahlab <0303>, nor of Achzib

<0392>, nor of Helbah <02462>, nor of Aphik <0663>, nor of Rehob

<07340>:

32  But the Asherites <0843> dwelt <03427> among <07130> the

Canaanites <03669>, the inhabitants <03427> of the land <0776>:

for they did not drive <03423> them out.

33  Neither <03808> did Naphtali <05321> drive <03423> out the

inhabitants <03427> of Bethshemesh <01053>, nor the inhabitants

<03427> of Bethanath <01043>; but he dwelt <03427> among <07130>

the Canaanites <03669>, the inhabitants <03427> of the land

<0776>: nevertheless the inhabitants <03427> of Bethshemesh

<01053> and of Bethanath <01043> became <01961> tributaries

<04522> unto them.

34  And the Amorites <0567> forced <03905> the children <01121>

of Dan <01835> into the mountain <02022>: for they would not

suffer <05414> them to come <03381> down <03381> to the valley

<06010>:

35  But the Amorites <0567> would <02974> dwell <03427> in

mount <02022> Heres <02776> in Aijalon <0357>, and in Shaalbim

<08169>: yet the hand <03027> of the house <01004> of Joseph

<03130> prevailed <03513>, so that they became <01961>

tributaries <04522>.

36  And the coast <01366> of the Amorites <0567> [was] from the

going <04608> up to Akrabbim <06137>, from the rock <05553>, and

upward <04605>.

Judges   2

 1. And an angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> came <05927> up

from Gilgal <01537> to Bochim <01066>, and said <0559>, I made

you to go <05927> up out of Egypt <04714>, and have brought

<0935> you unto the land <0776> which <0834> I sware <07650>

unto your fathers <01>; and I said <0559>, I will never break

<06565> my covenant <01285> with you.

2  And ye shall make <03772> no <03808> league <01285> with the

inhabitants <03427> of this <02063> land <0776>; ye shall throw

<05422> down <05422> their altars <04196>: but ye have not

obeyed <08085> my voice <06963>: why <04100> have ye done

<06213> this <02063>?

 3  Wherefore I also <01571> said <0559>, I will not drive

<01644> them out from before <06440> you; but they shall be [as

thorns] in your sides <06654>, and their gods <0430> shall be a

snare <04170> unto you.

4  And it came <01961> to pass, when the angel <04397> of the

LORD <03068> spake <01696> these <0428> words <01697> unto all

<03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478>, that the people

<05971> lifted <05375> up their voice <06963>, and wept <01058>.

5  And they called <07121> the name <08034> of that place

<04725> Bochim <01066>: and they sacrificed <02076> there

<08033> unto the LORD <03068>.

 6. And when Joshua <03091> had let the people <05971> go

<07971>, the children <01121> of Israel <03478> went <03212>

every man <0376> unto his inheritance <05159> to possess <03423>

the land <0776>.

7  And the people <05971> served <05647> the LORD <03068> all

<03605> the days <03117> of Joshua <03091>, and all <03605> the

days <03117> of the elders <02205> that outlived Joshua <03091>,

who <0834> had seen <07200> all <03605> the great <01419> works

<04639> of the LORD <03068>, that he did <06213> for Israel

<03478>.

8  And Joshua <03091> the son <01121> of Nun <05126>, the

servant <05650> of the LORD <03068>, died <04191>, [being] an

hundred <03967> and ten <06235> years <08141> old <01121>.

9  And they buried <06912> him in the border <01366> of his

inheritance <05159> in Timnathheres <08556>, in the mount

<02022> of Ephraim <0669>, on the north <06828> side of the hill

<02022> Gaash <01608>.

10  And also <01571> all <03605> that generation <01755> were

gathered <0622> unto their fathers <01>: and there arose <06965>

another <0312> generation <01755> after <0310> them, which

<0834> knew <03045> not the LORD <03068>, nor <01571> yet

<01571> the works <04639> which <0834> he had done <06213> for

Israel <03478>.

11  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>, and served

<05647> Baalim <01168>:

12  And they forsook <05800> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of

their fathers <01>, which brought <03318> them out of the land

<0776> of Egypt <04714>, and followed other <0312> gods <0430>,

of the gods <0430> of the people <05971> that [were] round

<05439> about them, and bowed <07812> themselves unto them, and

provoked the LORD <03068> to anger <03707>.

13  And they forsook <05800> the LORD <03068>, and served

<05647> Baal <01168> and Ashtaroth <06252>.

14  And the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was hot <02734>

against Israel <03478>, and he delivered <05414> them into the

hands <03027> of spoilers <08154> that spoiled <08155> them, and

he sold <04376> them into the hands <03027> of their enemies

<0341> round <05439> about, so that they could <03201> not any

longer <05750> stand <05975> before <06440> their enemies <0341>.

15  Whithersoever they went <03318> out, the hand <03027> of

the LORD <03068> was against them for evil <07451>, as the LORD

<03068> had said <01696>, and as the LORD <03068> had sworn

<07650> unto them: and they were greatly <03966> distressed

<03334>.

16  Nevertheless the LORD <03068> raised <06965> up judges

<08199>, which delivered <03467> them out of the hand <03027> of

those that spoiled <08154> them.

17  And yet <01571> they would not hearken <08085> unto their

judges <08199>, but they went a whoring <02181> after <0310>

other <0312> gods <0430>, and bowed <07812> themselves unto them:

they turned <05493> quickly <04118> out of the way <01870>

which <0834> their fathers <01> walked <01980> in, obeying

<08085> the commandments <04687> of the LORD <03068>; [but] they

did <06213> not so <03651>.

18  And when <03588> the LORD <03068> raised <06965> them up

judges <08199>, then the LORD <03068> was with the judge <08199>,

and delivered <03467> them out of the hand <03027> of their

enemies <0341> all <03605> the days <03117> of the judge <08199>:

for it repented <05162> the LORD <03068> because <06440> of

their groanings <05009> by reason of them that oppressed <03905>

them and vexed <01766> them.

19  And it came <01961> to pass, when the judge <08199> was

dead <04191>, [that] they returned <07725>, and corrupted

<07843> [themselves] more than their fathers <01>, in following

other <0312> gods <0430> to serve <05647> them, and to bow

<07812> down <07812> unto them; they ceased <05307> not from

their own doings <04611>, nor from their stubborn <07186> way

<01870>.

20  And the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was hot <02734>

against Israel <03478>; and he said <0559>, Because <03282> that

this <02088> people <01471> hath transgressed <05674> my

covenant <01285> which <0834> I commanded <06680> their fathers

<01>, and have not hearkened <08085> unto my voice <06963>;

 21  I also <01571> will not henceforth <03254> drive <03423>

out any from before <06440> them of the nations <01471> which

<0834> Joshua <03091> left <05800> when he died <04191>:

22  That through them I may prove <05254> Israel <03478>,

whether they will keep <08104> the way <01870> of the LORD

<03068> to walk <03212> therein, as their fathers <01> did keep

<08104> [it], or not.

 23  Therefore the LORD <03068> left <03241> those <0428>

nations <01471>, without <01115> driving <03423> them out

hastily <04118>; neither <03808> delivered <05414> he them into

the hand <03027> of Joshua <03091>.

Judges   3

 1. Now these <0428> [are] the nations <01471> which <0834> the

LORD <03068> left <03241>, to prove <05254> Israel <03478> by

them, [even] as many [of Israel] as had not known <03045> all

<03605> the wars <04421> of Canaan <03667>;

2  Only <07535> that the generations <01755> of the children

<01121> of Israel <03478> might know <03045>, to teach <03925>

them war <04421>, at <07535> the least <07535> such as before

<06440> knew <03045> nothing <03808> thereof;

3  [Namely], five <02568> lords <05633> of the Philistines

<06430>, and all <03605> the Canaanites <03669>, and the

Sidonians <06722>, and the Hivites <02340> that dwelt <03427> in

mount <02022> Lebanon <03844>, from mount <02022> Baalhermon

<01179> unto the entering <0935> in of Hamath <02574>.

4  And they were to prove <05254> Israel <03478> by them, to

know <03045> whether they would hearken <08085> unto the

commandments <04687> of the LORD <03068>, which <0834> he

commanded <06680> their fathers <01> by the hand <03027> of

Moses <04872>.

5  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> dwelt <03427>

among <07130> the Canaanites <03669>, Hittites <02850>, and

Amorites <0567>, and Perizzites <06522>, and Hivites <02340>,

and Jebusites <02983>:

6  And they took <03947> their daughters <01121> to be their

wives <0802>, and gave <05414> their daughters <01121> to their

sons <01121>, and served <05647> their gods <0430>.

7  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>, and forgat

<07911> the LORD <03068> their God <0430>, and served <05647>

Baalim <01168> and the groves <0842>.

 8. Therefore the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was hot

<02734> against Israel <03478>, and he sold <04376> them into

the hand <03027> of Chushanrishathaim <03573> king <04428> of

Mesopotamia <0763>: and the children <01121> of Israel <03478>

served <05647> Chushanrishathaim <03573> eight <08083> years

<08141>.

9  And when the children <01121> of Israel <03478> cried

<02199> unto the LORD <03068>, the LORD <03068> raised <06965>

up a deliverer <03467> to the children <01121> of Israel <03478>,

who delivered <03467> them, [even <0853>] Othniel <06274> the

son <01121> of Kenaz <07073>, Caleb's <03612> younger <06996>

brother <0251>.

10  And the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came <01961>

upon him, and he judged <08199> Israel <03478>, and went <03318>

out to war <04421>: and the LORD <03068> delivered <05414>

Chushanrishathaim <03573> king <04428> of Mesopotamia <0763>

into his hand <03027>; and his hand <03027> prevailed <05810>

against <05921> Chushanrishathaim <03573>.

11  And the land <0776> had rest <08252> forty <0705> years

<08141>. And Othniel <06274> the son <01121> of Kenaz <07073>

died <04191>.

 12. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> again <03254> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>:

and the LORD <03068> strengthened <02388> Eglon <05700> the king

<04428> of Moab <04124> against <05921> Israel <03478>, because

they had done <06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the

LORD <03068>.

13  And he gathered <0622> unto him the children <01121> of

Ammon <05983> and Amalek <06002>, and went <03212> and smote

<05221> Israel <03478>, and possessed <03423> the city <05892>

of palm <08558> trees.

14  So the children <01121> of Israel <03478> served <05647>

Eglon <05700> the king <04428> of Moab <04124> eighteen years

<08141>.

15  But when the children <01121> of Israel <03478> cried

<02199> unto the LORD <03068>, the LORD <03068> raised <06965>

them up a deliverer <03467>, Ehud <0261> the son <01121> of Gera

<01617>, a Benjamite <01145>, a man <0376> lefthanded: and by

him the children <01121> of Israel <03478> sent <07971> a

present <04503> unto Eglon <05700> the king <04428> of Moab

<04124>.

 16  But Ehud <0261> made <06213> him a dagger <02719> which had

two <08147> edges <06366>, of a cubit <01574> length <0753>; and

he did gird <02296> it under <08478> his raiment <04055> upon

his right <03225> thigh <03409>.

17  And he brought <07126> the present <04503> unto Eglon

<05700> king <04428> of Moab <04124>: and Eglon <05700> [was] a

very <03966> fat <01277> man <0376>.

18  And when <0834> he had made an end <03615> to offer <07126>

the present <04503>, he sent <07971> away the people <05971>

that bare <05375> the present <04503>.

19  But he himself <01931> turned <07725> again <07725> from

the quarries <06456> that [were] by Gilgal <01537>, and said

<0559>, I have a secret <05643> errand <01697> unto thee, O king

<04428>: who said <0559>, Keep silence <02013>. And all <03605>

that stood <05975> by him went <03318> out from him.

20  And Ehud <0261> came <0935> unto him; and he was sitting

<03427> in a summer <04747> parlour <05944>, which <0834> he had

for himself alone <0905>. And Ehud <0261> said <0559>, I have a

message <01697> from God <0430> unto thee. And he arose <06965>

out of [his] seat <03678>.

 21  And Ehud <0261> put <07971> forth <07971> his left <08040>

hand <03027>, and took <03947> the dagger <02719> from his right

<03225> thigh <03409>, and thrust <08628> it into his belly

<0990>:

22  And the haft <05325> also <01571> went <0935> in after

<0310> the blade <03851>; and the fat <02459> closed <05462>

upon the blade <03851>, so <03588> that he could not draw

<08025> the dagger <02719> out of his belly <0990>; and the dirt

<06574> came <03318> out.

23  Then Ehud <0261> went <03318> forth <03318> through the

porch <04528>, and shut <05462> the doors <01817> of the parlour

<05944> upon him, and locked <05274> them.

24  When he was gone <03318> out, his servants <05650> came

<0935>; and when they saw <07200> that, behold <02009>, the

doors <01817> of the parlour <05944> [were] locked <05274>, they

said <0559>, Surely <0389> he covereth <05526> his feet <07272>

in his summer <04747> chamber <02315>.

25  And they tarried <02342> till <05704> they were ashamed

<0954>: and, behold <02009>, he opened <06605> not the doors

<01817> of the parlour <05944>; therefore they took <03947> a

key <04668>, and opened <06605> [them]: and, behold <02009>,

their lord <0113> [was] fallen <05307> down dead <04191> on the

earth <0776>.

26  And Ehud <0261> escaped <04422> while <05704> they tarried

<04102>, and passed <05674> beyond <05674> the quarries <06456>,

and escaped <04422> unto Seirath <08167>.

27  And it came <01961> to pass, when he was come <0935>, that

he blew <08628> a trumpet <07782> in the mountain <02022> of

Ephraim <0669>, and the children <01121> of Israel <03478> went

<03381> down <03381> with him from the mount <02022>, and he

before <06440> them.

28  And he said <0559> unto them, Follow <07291> after <0310>

me: for the LORD <03068> hath delivered <05414> your enemies

<0341> the Moabites <04124> into your hand <03027>. And they

went <03381> down <03381> after <0310> him, and took <03920> the

fords <04569> of Jordan <03383> toward Moab <04124>, and

suffered <05414> not a man <0376> to pass <05674> over <05674>.

29  And they slew <05221> of Moab <04124> at that time <06256>

about ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376>, all <03605> lusty

<08082>, and all <03605> men <0376> of valour <02428>; and there

escaped <04422> not a man <0376>.

30  So Moab <04124> was subdued <03665> that day <03117> under

<08478> the hand <03027> of Israel <03478>. And the land <0776>

had rest <08252> fourscore <08084> years <08141>.

 31. And after <0310> him was Shamgar <08044> the son <01121> of

Anath <06067>, which slew <05221> of the Philistines <06430> six

<08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> with an ox <01241> goad

<04451>: and he also <01571> delivered <03467> Israel <03478>.

Judges   4

 1. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> again <03254> did

<06213> evil <07451> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>,

when Ehud <0261> was dead <04191>.

2  And the LORD <03068> sold <04376> them into the hand <03027>

of Jabin <02985> king <04428> of Canaan <03667>, that reigned

<04427> in Hazor <02674>; the captain <08269> of whose host

<06635> [was] Sisera <05516>, which dwelt <03427> in Harosheth

<02800> of the Gentiles <01471>.

3  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> cried <06817>

unto the LORD <03068>: for he had nine <08672> hundred <03967>

chariots <07393> of iron <01270>; and twenty <06242> years

<08141> he mightily <02393> oppressed <03905> the children

<01121> of Israel <03478>.

 4. And Deborah <01683>, a prophetess <05031>, the wife <0802>

of Lapidoth <03941>, she judged <08199> Israel <03478> at that

time <06256>.

5  And she dwelt <03427> under <08478> the palm <08560> tree of

Deborah <01683> between <0996> Ramah <07414> and Bethel <01008>

in mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>: and the children <01121> of

Israel <03478> came <05927> up to her for judgment <04941>.

6  And she sent <07971> and called <07121> Barak <01301> the

son <01121> of Abinoam <042> out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said

<0559> unto him, Hath not the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel

<03478> commanded <06680>, [saying], Go <03212> and draw <04900>

toward mount <02022> Tabor <08396>, and take <03947> with thee

ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376> of the children <01121>

of Naphtali <05321> and of the children <01121> of Zebulun

<02074>?

7  And I will draw <04900> unto thee to the river <05158>

Kishon <07028> Sisera <05516>, the captain <08269> of Jabin's

<02985> army <06635>, with his chariots <07393> and his

multitude <01995>; and I will deliver <05414> him into thine

hand <03027>.

8  And Barak <01301> said <0559> unto her, If <0518> thou wilt

go <03212> with me, then I will go <01982>: but if <0518> thou

wilt not go <03212> with me, [then] I will not go <03212>.

9  And she said <0559>, I will surely go <03212> with thee:

notwithstanding <0657> the journey <01870> that thou takest

<01980> shall not be for thine honour <08597>; for the LORD

<03068> shall sell <04376> Sisera <05516> into the hand <03027>

of a woman <0802>. And Deborah <01683> arose <06965>, and went

<03212> with Barak <01301> to Kedesh <06943>.

 10. And Barak <01301> called <02199> Zebulun <02074> and

Naphtali <05321> to Kedesh <06943>; and he went <05927> up with

ten <06235> thousand <0505> men <0376> at his feet <07272>: and

Deborah <01683> went <05927> up with him.

11  Now Heber <02268> the Kenite <07014>, [which was] of the

children <01121> of Hobab <02246> the father <02859> in law

<02859> of Moses <04872>, had severed <06504> himself from the

Kenites <07017>, and pitched <05186> his tent <0168> unto the

plain <0436> of Zaanaim, which <0834> [is] by Kedesh <06943>.

12  And they shewed <05046> Sisera <05516> that Barak <01301>

the son <01121> of Abinoam <042> was gone <05927> up to mount

<02022> Tabor <08396>.

 13  And Sisera <05516> gathered <02199> together all <03605>

his chariots <07393>, [even] nine <08672> hundred <03967>

chariots <07393> of iron <01270>, and all <03605> the people

<05971> that [were] with him, from Harosheth <02800> of the

Gentiles <01471> unto the river <05158> of Kishon <07028>.

14  And Deborah <01683> said <0559> unto Barak <01301>, Up; for

this <02088> [is] the day <03117> in which <0834> the LORD

<03068> hath delivered <05414> Sisera <05516> into thine hand

<03027>: is not the LORD <03068> gone <03318> out before <06440>

thee? So Barak <01301> went <03381> down <03381> from mount

<02022> Tabor <08396>, and ten <06235> thousand <0505> men

<0376> after <0310> him.

 15  And the LORD <03068> discomfited <02000> Sisera <05516>,

and all <03605> [his] chariots <07393>, and all <03605> [his]

host <04264>, with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719> before

<06440> Barak <01301>; so that Sisera <05516> lighted <03381>

down <03381> off <05921> [his] chariot <04818>, and fled <05127>

away on his feet <07272>.

16  But Barak <01301> pursued <07291> after <0310> the chariots

<07393>, and after <0310> the host <04264>, unto Harosheth

<02800> of the Gentiles <01471>: and all <03605> the host

<04264> of Sisera <05516> fell <05307> upon the edge <06310> of

the sword <02719>; [and] there was not a man left <07604>.

 17. Howbeit Sisera <05516> fled <05127> away on his feet

<07272> to the tent <0168> of Jael <03278> the wife <0802> of

Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017>: for [there was] peace <07965>

between <0996> Jabin <02985> the king <04428> of Hazor <02674>

and the house <01004> of Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017>.

18  And Jael <03278> went <03318> out to meet <07125> Sisera

<05516>, and said <0559> unto him, Turn <05493> in, my lord

<03068>, turn <05493> in to me; fear <03372> not. And when he

had turned <05493> in unto her into the tent <0168>, she covered

<03680> him with a mantle <08063>.

19  And he said <0559> unto her, Give me, I pray <04994> thee,

a little <04592> water <04325> to drink <08248>; for I am

thirsty <06770>. And she opened <06605> a bottle <04997> of milk

<02461>, and gave him drink <08248>, and covered <03680> him.

20  Again he said <0559> unto her, Stand <05975> in the door

<06607> of the tent <0168>, and it shall be, when <0518> any man

<0376> doth come <0935> and enquire <07592> of thee, and say

<0559>, Is there any man <0376> here <06311>? that thou shalt

say <0559>, No <0369>.

 21  Then Jael <03278> Heber's <02268> wife <0802> took <03947>

a nail <03489> of the tent <0168>, and took <07760> an hammer

<04718> in her hand <03027>, and went <0935> softly <03814> unto

him, and smote <08628> the nail <03489> into his temples <07451>,

and fastened <06795> it into the ground <0776>: for he was fast

asleep <07290> and weary <05774>. So he died <04191>.

 22  And, behold <02009>, as Barak <01301> pursued <07291>

Sisera <05516>, Jael <03278> came <03318> out to meet <07125>

him, and said <0559> unto him, Come <03212>, and I will shew

<07200> thee the man <0376> whom <0834> thou seekest <01245>.

And when he came <0935> into her [tent], behold <02009>, Sisera

<05516> lay <05307> dead <04191>, and the nail <03489> [was] in

his temples <07451>.

23  So God <0430> subdued <03665> on that day <03117> Jabin

<02985> the king <04428> of Canaan <03667> before <06440> the

children <01121> of Israel <03478>.

24  And the hand <03027> of the children <01121> of Israel

<03478> prospered <01980>, and prevailed <07186> against <05921>

Jabin <02985> the king <04428> of Canaan <03667>, until <05704>

they had destroyed <03772> Jabin <02985> king <04428> of Canaan

<03667>.

Judges   5

 1. Then sang <07891> Deborah <01683> and Barak <01301> the son

<01121> of Abinoam <042> on that day <03117>, saying <0559>,

2  Praise <01288> ye the LORD <03068> for the avenging of

Israel <03478>, when the people <05971> willingly <05068>

offered themselves.

 3  Hear <08085>, O ye kings <04428>; give ear <0238>, O ye

princes <07336>; I, [even] I, will sing <07891> unto the LORD

<03068>; I will sing <02167> [praise] to the LORD <03068> God

<0430> of Israel <03478>.

4  LORD <03068>, when thou wentest <03318> out of Seir <08165>,

when thou marchedst <06805> out of the field <07704> of Edom

<0123>, the earth <0776> trembled <07493>, and the heavens

<08064> dropped <05197>, the clouds <05645> also <01571> dropped

<05197> water <04325>.

5  The mountains <02022> melted <05140> from before <06440> the

LORD <03068>, [even] that Sinai <05514> from before <06440> the

LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>.

 6. In the days <03117> of Shamgar <08044> the son <01121> of

Anath <06067>, in the days <03117> of Jael <03278>, the highways

<0734> were unoccupied <02308>, and the travellers walked

<03212> through byways.

7  [The inhabitants of] the villages <06520> ceased <02308>,

they ceased <02308> in Israel <03478>, until <05704> that I

Deborah <01683> arose <06965>, that I arose <06965> a mother

<0517> in Israel <03478>.

 8  They chose <0977> new <02319> gods <0430>; then <0227> [was]

war <03901> in the gates <08179>: was there a shield <04043> or

spear <07420> seen <07200> among forty <0705> thousand <0505> in

Israel <03478>?

9  My heart <03820> [is] toward the governors <02710> of Israel

<03478>, that offered themselves willingly <05068> among the

people <05971>. Bless <01288> ye the LORD <03068>.

10  Speak <07878>, ye that ride <07392> on white <06715> asses

<0860>, ye that sit <03427> in judgment <04055>, and walk

<01980> by the way <01870>.

11  [They that are delivered] from the noise <06963> of archers

<02686> in the places of drawing <04857> water, there shall they

rehearse <08567> the righteous <06666> acts of the LORD <03068>,

[even] the righteous <06666> acts [toward the inhabitants] of

his villages <06520> in Israel <03478>: then shall the people

<05971> of the LORD <03068> go <03381> down <03381> to the gates

<08179>.

 12. Awake <05782>, awake <05782>, Deborah <01683>: awake

<05782>, awake <05782>, utter <01696> a song <07892>: arise

<06965>, Barak <01301>, and lead thy captivity <07628> captive

<07617>, thou son <01121> of Abinoam <042>.

13  Then <0227> he made him that remaineth <08300> have

dominion <07287> over the nobles <0117> among the people <05971>:

the LORD <03068> made me have dominion <07287> over the mighty

<01368>.

14  Out of Ephraim <0669> [was there] a root <08328> of them

against Amalek <06002>; after <0310> thee, Benjamin <01144>,

among thy people <05971>; out of Machir <04353> came <03381>

down <03381> governors <02710>, and out of Zebulun <02074> they

that handle <04900> the pen <07626> of the writer <05608>.

15  And the princes <08269> of Issachar <03485> [were] with

Deborah <01683>; even Issachar <03485>, and also <03651> Barak

<01301>: he was sent <07971> on foot <07272> into the valley

<06010>. For the divisions <06391> of Reuben <07205> [there

were] great <01419> thoughts <02711> of heart <03820>.

 16  Why <04100> abodest <03427> thou among <0996> the

sheepfolds <04942>, to hear <08085> the bleatings <08292> of the

flocks <05739>? For the divisions <06391> of Reuben <07205>

[there were] great <01419> searchings <02714> of heart <03820>.

 17  Gilead <01568> abode <07931> beyond <05676> Jordan <03383>:

and why <04100> did Dan <01835> remain <01481> in ships <0591>?

Asher <0836> continued <03427> on the sea <03220> shore <02348>,

and abode <07931> in his breaches <04664>.

 18  Zebulun <02074> and Naphtali <05321> [were] a people

<05971> [that] jeoparded <02778> their lives <05315> unto the

death <04191> in the high <04791> places of the field <07704>.

19  The kings <04428> came <0935> [and] fought <03898>, then

<0227> fought <03898> the kings <04428> of Canaan <03667> in

Taanach <08590> by the waters <04325> of Megiddo <04023>; they

took <03947> no <03808> gain <01214> of money <03701>.

20  They fought <03898> from heaven <08064>; the stars <03556>

in their courses <04546> fought <03898> against <05973> Sisera

<05516>.

21  The river <05158> of Kishon <07028> swept <01640> them away,

that ancient <06917> river <05158>, the river <05158> Kishon

<07028>. O my soul <05315>, thou hast trodden <01869> down

strength <05797>.

22  Then <0227> were the horsehoofs broken <01986> by the means

of the pransings <01726>, the pransings <01726> of their mighty

<047> ones.

23  Curse <0779> ye Meroz <04789>, said <0559> the angel

<04397> of the LORD <03068>, curse <0779> ye bitterly <0779> the

inhabitants <03427> thereof; because <03588> they came <0935>

not to the help <05833> of the LORD <03068>, to the help <05833>

of the LORD <03068> against the mighty <01368>.

 24. Blessed <01288> above women <0802> shall Jael <03278> the

wife <0802> of Heber <02268> the Kenite <07017> be, blessed

<01288> shall she be above women <0802> in the tent <0168>.

25  He asked <07592> water <04325>, [and] she gave <05414>

[him] milk <02461>; she brought <07126> forth <07126> butter

<02529> in a lordly <0117> dish <05602>.

26  She put <07971> her hand <03027> to the nail <03489>, and

her right <03225> hand <03225> to the workmen's <06001> hammer

<01989>; and with the hammer she smote <01986> Sisera <05516>,

she smote <04277> off his head <07218>, when she had pierced

<04272> and stricken <02498> through his temples <07451>.

27  At <0996> her feet <07272> he bowed <03766>, he fell

<05307>, he lay <07901> down <07901>: at <0996> her feet <07272>

he bowed <03766>, he fell <05307>: where <0834> he bowed <03766>,

there <08033> he fell <05307> down dead <07703>.

28  The mother <0517> of Sisera <05516> looked <08259> out at

<01157> a window <02474>, and cried <02980> through <01157> the

lattice <0822>, Why <04069> is his chariot <07393> [so] long

<0954> in coming <0935>? why <04069> tarry <0309> the wheels

<06471> of his chariots <04818>?

29  Her wise <02450> ladies <08282> answered <06030> her, yea

<0637>, she returned <07725> answer <0559> to herself,

30  Have they not sped <04672>? have they [not] divided <02505>

the prey <07998>; to every <07218> man <01397> a damsel <07356>

[or] two; to Sisera <05516> a prey <07998> of divers <06648>

colours <06648>, a prey <07998> of divers <06648> colours

<06648> of needlework <07553>, of divers <06648> colours <06648>

of needlework <07553> on both sides, [meet] for the necks

<06677> of [them that take] the spoil <07998>?

 31  So <03651> let all <03605> thine enemies <0341> perish <06>,

O LORD <03068>: but [let] them that love <0157> him [be] as the

sun <08121> when he goeth <03318> forth <03318> in his might

<01369>. And the land <0776> had rest <08252> forty <0705> years

<08141>.

Judges   6

 1. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>: and the LORD

<03068> delivered <05414> them into the hand <03027> of Midian

<04080> seven <07651> years <08141>.

2  And the hand <03027> of Midian <04080> prevailed <05810>

against <05921> Israel <03478>: [and] because <06440> of the

Midianites <04080> the children <01121> of Israel <03478> made

<06213> them the dens <04492> which <0834> [are] in the

mountains <02022>, and caves <04631>, and strong <04679> holds

<04679>.

3  And [so] it was, when <0518> Israel <03478> had sown <02232>,

that the Midianites <04080> came <05927> up, and the Amalekites

<06003>, and the children <01121> of the east <06924>, even they

came <05927> up against <05921> them;

4  And they encamped <02583> against <05921> them, and

destroyed <07843> the increase <02981> of the earth <0776>, till

<05704> thou come <0935> unto Gaza <05804>, and left <07604> no

<03808> sustenance <04241> for Israel <03478>, neither sheep

<07716>, nor ox <07794>, nor ass <02543>.

5  For they came <05927> up with their cattle <04735> and their

tents <0168>, and they came <0935> as grasshoppers <0697> for

multitude <07230>; [for] both they and their camels <01581> were

without <0369> number <04557>: and they entered <0935> into the

land <0776> to destroy <07843> it.

 6  And Israel <03478> was greatly <03966> impoverished <01809>

because <06440> of the Midianites <04080>; and the children

<01121> of Israel <03478> cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068>.

 7. And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> the children

<01121> of Israel <03478> cried <02199> unto the LORD <03068>

because of the Midianites <04080>,

 8  That the LORD <03068> sent <07971> a prophet <05030> unto

the children <01121> of Israel <03478>, which said <0559> unto

them, Thus <03541> saith <0559> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of

Israel <03478>, I brought <05927> you up from Egypt <04714>, and

brought <03318> you forth <03318> out of the house <01004> of

bondage <05650>;

9  And I delivered <05337> you out of the hand <03027> of the

Egyptians <04714>, and out of the hand <03027> of all <03605>

that oppressed <03905> you, and drave <01644> them out from

before <06440> you, and gave <05414> you their land <0776>;

10  And I said <0559> unto you, I [am] the LORD <03068> your

God <0430>; fear <03372> not the gods <0430> of the Amorites

<0567>, in whose <0834> land <0776> ye dwell <03427>: but ye

have not obeyed <08085> my voice <06963>.

 11. And there came <0935> an angel <04397> of the LORD <03068>,

and sat <03427> under <08478> an oak <0424> which <0834> [was]

in Ophrah <06084>, that [pertained] unto Joash <03101> the

Abiezrite <033>: and his son <01121> Gideon <01439> threshed

<02251> wheat <02406> by the winepress <01660>, to hide <05127>

[it] from the Midianites <04080>.

12  And the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> appeared <07200>

unto him, and said <0559> unto him, The LORD <03068> [is] with

thee, thou mighty <01368> man of valour <02428>.

13  And Gideon <01439> said <0559> unto him, Oh <0994> my Lord

<0113>, if the LORD <03068> be with us, why <04100> then is all

<03605> this <02063> befallen <04672> us? and where <0346> [be]

all <03605> his miracles <06381> which <0834> our fathers <01>

told <05608> us of, saying <0559>, Did <06213> not the LORD

<03068> bring <05927> us up from Egypt <04714>? but now <06258>

the LORD <03068> hath forsaken <05203> us, and delivered <05414>

us into the hands <03709> of the Midianites <04080>.

14  And the LORD <03068> looked <06437> upon him, and said

<0559>, Go <03212> in this <02088> thy might <03581>, and thou

shalt save <03467> Israel <03478> from the hand <03709> of the

Midianites <04080>: have not I sent <07971> thee?

15  And he said <0559> unto him, Oh <0994> my Lord <0136>,

wherewith <04100> shall I save <03467> Israel <03478>? behold

<02009>, my family <0504> [is] poor <01800> in Manasseh <04519>,

and I [am] the least <06810> in my father's <01> house <01004>.

 16  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto him, Surely <03588> I

will be with thee, and thou shalt smite <05221> the Midianites

<04080> as one <0259> man <0376>.

17  And he said <0559> unto him, If <0518> now <04994> I have

found <04672> grace <02580> in thy sight <05869>, then shew

<06213> me a sign <0226> that thou talkest <01696> with me.

 18  Depart <04185> not hence <02088>, I pray <04994> thee,

until <05704> I come <0935> unto thee, and bring <03318> forth

<03318> my present <04503>, and set <03240> [it] before <06440>

thee. And he said <0559>, I will tarry <03427> until <05704>

thou come <07725> again <07725>.

 19  And Gideon <01439> went <0935> in, and made <06213> ready a

kid, and unleavened <04682> cakes <04682> of an ephah <0374> of

flour <07058>: the flesh <01320> he put <07760> in a basket

<05536>, and he put <07760> the broth <04839> in a pot <06517>,

and brought <03318> [it] out unto him under <08478> the oak

<0424>, and presented <05066> [it].

20  And the angel <04397> of God <0430> said <0559> unto him,

Take <03947> the flesh <01320> and the unleavened <04682> cakes

<04682>, and lay <03241> [them] upon this <01975> rock <05553>,

and pour <08210> out the broth <04839>. And he did <06213> so

<03651>.

21  Then the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> put <07971>

forth <07971> the end <07097> of the staff <04938> that [was] in

his hand <03027>, and touched <05060> the flesh <01320> and the

unleavened <04682> cakes <04682>; and there rose <05927> up fire

<0784> out of the rock <06697>, and consumed <0398> the flesh

<01320> and the unleavened <04682> cakes <02471>. Then the angel

<04397> of the LORD <03068> departed <01980> out of his sight

<05869>.

22  And when Gideon <01439> perceived <07200> that he [was] an

angel <04397> of the LORD <03068>, Gideon <01439> said <0559>,

Alas <0160>, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>! for because I have seen

<07200> an angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> face <06440> to

face <06440>.

23  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto him, Peace <07965>

[be] unto thee; fear <03372> not: thou shalt not die <04191>.

24  Then Gideon <01439> built <01129> an altar <04196> there

<08033> unto the LORD <03068>, and called <07121> it

Jehovahshalom <03073>: unto this <02088> day <03117> it [is] yet

<05750> in Ophrah <06084> of the Abiezrites <033>.

 25. And it came <01961> to pass the same <01931> night <03915>,

that the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto him, Take <03947> thy

father's <01> young <06499> bullock <06499>, even the second

<08145> bullock <06499> of seven <07651> years <08141> old, and

throw <02040> down <02040> the altar <04196> of Baal <01168>

that thy father <01> hath, and cut <03772> down the grove <0842>

that [is] by it:

26  And build <01129> an altar <04196> unto the LORD <03068>

thy God <0430> upon the top <07218> of this <02088> rock <04581>,

in the ordered <04634> place <04634>, and take <03947> the

second <08145> bullock <06499>, and offer <05927> a burnt

<05930> sacrifice with the wood <06086> of the grove <0842>

which <0834> thou shalt cut <03772> down.

 27  Then Gideon <01439> took <03947> ten <06235> men <0582> of

his servants <05650>, and did <06213> as the LORD <03068> had

said <01696> unto him: and [so] it was, because <0834> he feared

<03372> his father's <01> household <01004>, and the men <0582>

of the city <05892>, that he could not do <06213> [it] by day

<03119>, that he did <06213> [it] by night <03915>.

28  And when the men <0582> of the city <05892> arose <07925>

early <07925> in the morning <01242>, behold <02009>, the altar

<04196> of Baal <01168> was cast <05422> down <05422>, and the

grove <0842> was cut <03772> down that [was] by it, and the

second <08145> bullock <06499> was offered <05927> upon the

altar <04196> [that was] built <01129>.

29  And they said <0559> one <0376> to another <07453>, Who

<04310> hath done <06213> this <02088> thing <01697>? And when

they enquired <01875> and asked <01245>, they said <0559>,

Gideon <01439> the son <01121> of Joash <03101> hath done

<06213> this <02088> thing <01697>.

30  Then the men <0582> of the city <05892> said <0559> unto

Joash <03101>, Bring <03318> out thy son <01121>, that he may

die <04191>: because <03588> he hath cast <05422> down the altar

<04196> of Baal <01168>, and because <03588> he hath cut <03772>

down the grove <0842> that [was] by it.

31  And Joash <03101> said <0559> unto all <03605> that stood

<05975> against <05921> him, Will ye plead <07378> for Baal

<01168>? will ye save <03467> him? he that will plead <07378>

for him, let him be put to death <04191> whilst <05704> [it is

yet] morning <01242>: if <0518> he [be] a god <0430>, let him

plead <07378> for himself, because <03588> [one] hath cast

<05422> down <05422> his altar <04196>.

32  Therefore on that day <03117> he called <07121> him

Jerubbaal <03378>, saying <0559>, Let Baal <01168> plead <07378>

against him, because <03588> he hath thrown <05422> down <05422>

his altar <04196>.

 33. Then all <03605> the Midianites <04080> and the Amalekites

<06003> and the children <01121> of the east <06924> were

gathered <0622> together <03162>, and went <05674> over <05674>,

and pitched <02583> in the valley <06010> of Jezreel <03157>.

34  But the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came <03847>

upon Gideon <01439>, and he blew <08628> a trumpet <07782>; and

Abiezer <044> was gathered <02199> after <0310> him.

35  And he sent <07971> messengers <04397> throughout all

<03605> Manasseh <04519>; who also <01571> was gathered <02199>

after <0310> him: and he sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

Asher <0836>, and unto Zebulun <02074>, and unto Naphtali

<05321>; and they came <05927> up to meet <07125> them.

 36  And Gideon <01439> said <0559> unto God <0430>, If <0518>

thou wilt save <03467> Israel <03478> by mine hand <03027>, as

thou hast said <01696>,

 37  Behold <02009>, I will put <03322> a fleece <01492> of wool

<06785> in the floor <01637>; [and] if <0518> the dew <02919> be

on <05921> the fleece <01492> only <0905>, and [it be] dry

<02721> upon all <03605> the earth <0776> [beside], then shall I

know <03045> that thou wilt save <03467> Israel <03478> by mine

hand <03027>, as thou hast said <01696>.

38  And it was so <03651>: for he rose <07925> up early <07925>

on the morrow <04283>, and thrust <02115> the fleece <01492>

together, and wringed <04680> the dew <02919> out of the fleece

<01492>, a bowl <05602> full <04392> of water <04325>.

39  And Gideon <01439> said <0559> unto God <0430>, Let not

thine anger <0639> be hot <02734> against me, and I will speak

<01696> but this once <06471>: let me prove <05254>, I pray

<04994> thee, but this once <06471> with the fleece <01492>; let

it now <04994> be dry <02721> only <0905> upon the fleece

<01492>, and upon all <03605> the ground <0776> let there be dew

<02919>.

 40  And God <0430> did <06213> so <03651> that night <03915>:

for it was dry <02721> upon the fleece <01492> only <0905>, and

there was dew <02919> on <05921> all <03605> the ground <0776>.

Judges   7

 1. Then Jerubbaal <03378>, who <04310> [is] Gideon <01439>, and

all <03605> the people <05971> that [were] with him, rose

<07925> up early <07925>, and pitched <02583> beside <05921> the

well <05878> of Harod <05878>: so that the host <04264> of the

Midianites <04080> were on the north <06828> side of them, by

the hill <01389> of Moreh <04176>, in the valley <06010>.

2  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Gideon <01439>, The

people <05971> that [are] with thee [are] too many <07227> for

me to give <05414> the Midianites <04080> into their hands

<03027>, lest <06435> Israel <03478> vaunt <06286> themselves

against <05921> me, saying <0559>, Mine own hand <03027> hath

saved <03467> me.

3  Now <06288> therefore go <04994> to, proclaim <07121> in the

ears <0241> of the people <05971>, saying <0559>, Whosoever

<04310> [is] fearful <03373> and afraid <02730>, let him return

<07725> and depart <06852> early <06852> from mount <02022>

Gilead <01568>. And there returned <07725> of the people <05971>

twenty <06242> and two <08147> thousand <0505>; and there

remained <07604> ten <06235> thousand <0505>.

4  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Gideon <01439>, The

people <05971> [are] yet <05750> [too] many <07227>; bring

<0338> them down <03381> unto the water <04325>, and I will try

<06884> them for thee there <08033>: and it shall be, [that] of

whom <0834> I say <0559> unto thee, This <02088> shall go

<03212> with thee, the same <01931> shall go <03212> with thee;

and of whomsoever <0834> I say <0559> unto thee, This <02088>

shall not go <03212> with thee, the same <01931> shall not go

<03212>.

5  So he brought <03381> down <03381> the people <05971> unto

the water <04325>: and the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Gideon

<01439>, Every <03605> one that lappeth <03952> of the water

<04325> with his tongue <03956>, as a dog <03611> lappeth

<03952>, him shalt thou set <03322> by himself; likewise every

<03605> one that boweth <03766> down upon his knees <01290> to

drink <08354>.

6  And the number <04557> of them that lapped <03952>,

[putting] their hand <03027> to their mouth <06310>, were three

<07969> hundred <03967> men <0376>: but all <03605> the rest

<03499> of the people <05971> bowed <03766> down upon their

knees <01290> to drink <08354> water <04325>.

7  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto Gideon <01439>, By the

three <07969> hundred <03967> men <0376> that lapped <03952>

will I save <03467> you, and deliver <05414> the Midianites

<04080> into thine hand <03027>: and let all <03605> the [other]

people <05971> go <03212> every man <0376> unto his place

<04725>.

8  So the people <05971> took <03947> victuals <06720> in their

hand <03027>, and their trumpets <07782>: and he sent <07971>

all <03605> [the rest of] Israel <03478> every man <0376> unto

his tent <0168>, and retained <02388> those three <07969>

hundred <03967> men <0376>: and the host <04264> of Midian

<04080> was beneath <08478> him in the valley <06010>.

 9. And it came <01961> to pass the same <01931> night <03915>,

that the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto him, Arise <06965>, get

<03381> thee down <03381> unto the host <04264>; for I have

delivered <05414> it into thine hand <03027>.

 10  But if <0518> thou fear <03373> to go <03381> down <03381>,

go <03381> thou with Phurah <06513> thy servant <05288> down

<03381> to the host <04264>:

 11  And thou shalt hear <08085> what <04100> they say <01696>;

and afterward <0310> shall thine hands <03027> be strengthened

<02388> to go <03381> down <03381> unto the host <04264>. Then

went <03381> he down <03381> with Phurah <06513> his servant

<05288> unto the outside <07097> of the armed <02571> men that

[were] in the host <04264>.

12  And the Midianites <04080> and the Amalekites <06003> and

all <03605> the children <01121> of the east <06924> lay <05307>

along in the valley <06010> like grasshoppers <0697> for

multitude <07230>; and their camels <01581> [were] without

<0369> number <04557>, as the sand <02344> by the sea <03220>

side <08193> for multitude <07230>.

13  And when Gideon <01439> was come <0935>, behold <02009>,

[there was] a man <0376> that told <05608> a dream <02472> unto

his fellow <07453>, and said <0559>, Behold <02009>, I dreamed

<02492> a dream <02472>, and, lo <02009>, a cake <06742> of

barley <08184> bread <03899> tumbled <02015> into the host

<04264> of Midian <04080>, and came <0935> unto a tent <0168>,

and smote <05221> it that it fell <05307>, and overturned

<02015> it, that the tent <0168> lay <05307> along.

14  And his fellow <07453> answered <06030> and said <0559>,

This <02063> [is] nothing <0369> else save the sword <02719> of

Gideon <01439> the son <01121> of Joash <03101>, a man <0376> of

Israel <03478>: [for] into his hand <03027> hath God <0430>

delivered <05414> Midian <04080>, and all <03605> the host

<04264>.

15  And it was [so], when Gideon <01439> heard <08085> the

telling <04557> of the dream <02472>, and the interpretation

<07667> thereof, that he worshipped <07812>, and returned

<07725> into <0413> the host <04264> of Israel <03478>, and said

<0559>, Arise <06965>; for the LORD <03068> hath delivered

<05414> into your hand <03027> the host <04264> of Midian

<04080>.

 16. And he divided <02673> the three <07969> hundred <03967>

men <0376> [into] three <07969> companies <07218>, and he put

<05414> a trumpet <07782> in every <03605> man's hand <03027>,

with empty <07385> pitchers <03537>, and lamps <03940> within

<08432> the pitchers <03537>.

17  And he said <0559> unto them, Look <07200> on me, and do

<06213> likewise <03651>: and, behold <02009>, when I come

<0935> to the outside <07097> of the camp <04264>, it shall be

[that], as I do <06213>, so <03651> shall ye do <06213>.

 18  When I blow <08628> with a trumpet <07782>, I and all

<03605> that [are] with me, then blow <08628> ye the trumpets

<07782> also <01571> on every <03605> side <05439> of all

<03605> the camp <04264>, and say <0559>, [The sword] of the

LORD <03068>, and of Gideon <01439>.

19  So Gideon <01439>, and the hundred <03967> men <0376> that

[were] with him, came <0935> unto the outside <07097> of the

camp <04264> in the beginning <07218> of the middle <08484>

watch <0821>; and they had but newly <06965> set <06965> the

watch <08104>: and they blew <08628> the trumpets <07782>, and

brake <05310> the pitchers <03537> that [were] in their hands

<03027>.

20  And the three <07969> companies <07218> blew <08628> the

trumpets <07782>, and brake <07665> the pitchers <03537>, and

held <02388> the lamps <03940> in their left <08040> hands

<03027>, and the trumpets <07782> in their right <03225> hands

<03027> to blow <08628> [withal]: and they cried <07121>, The

sword <02719> of the LORD <03068>, and of Gideon <01439>.

21  And they stood <05975> every man <0376> in his place

<08478> round <05439> about the camp <04264>: and all <03605>

the host <04264> ran <07323>, and cried <07321>, and fled

<05127>.

22  And the three <07969> hundred <03967> blew <08628> the

trumpets <07782>, and the LORD <03068> set <07760> every man's

<0376> sword <02719> against his fellow <07453>, even throughout

all <03605> the host <04264>: and the host <04264> fled <05127>

to Bethshittah <01029> in Zererath, [and] to the border <08193>

of Abelmeholah <065>, unto Tabbath <02888>.

 23. And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> gathered <06817>

themselves together out of Naphtali <05321>, and out of Asher

<0836>, and out of all <03605> Manasseh <04519>, and pursued

<07291> after <0310> the Midianites <04080>.

 24  And Gideon <01439> sent <07971> messengers <04397>

throughout all <03605> mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>, saying

<0559>, Come <03381> down <03381> against <07125> the Midianites

<04080>, and take <03920> before them the waters <04325> unto

Bethbarah <01012> and Jordan <03383>. Then all <03605> the men

<0376> of Ephraim <0669> gathered <06817> themselves together,

and took <03920> the waters <04325> unto Bethbarah <01012> and

Jordan <03383>.

25  And they took <03920> two <08147> princes <08269> of the

Midianites <04080>, Oreb <06157> and Zeeb <02062>; and they slew

<02026> Oreb <06157> upon the rock <06697> Oreb <06157>, and

Zeeb <02062> they slew <02026> at the winepress <03342> of Zeeb

<02062>, and pursued <07291> Midian <04080>, and brought <0935>

the heads <07218> of Oreb <06157> and Zeeb <02062> to Gideon

<01439> on the other <05676> side <05676> Jordan <03383>.

Judges   8

 1. And the men <0376> of Ephraim <0669> said <0559> unto him,

Why <04100> hast thou served <06213> us thus, that thou calledst

<07121> us not, when <03588> thou wentest <01980> to fight

<03898> with the Midianites <04080>? And they did chide <07378>

with him sharply <02394>.

2  And he said <0559> unto them, What <04100> have I done

<06213> now <06288> in comparison of you? [Is] not the gleaning

<05955> of the grapes of Ephraim <0669> better <02896> than the

vintage <01210> of Abiezer <044>?

3  God <0430> hath delivered <05414> into your hands <03027>

the princes <08269> of Midian <04080>, Oreb <06157> and Zeeb

<02062>: and what <04100> was I able <03201> to do <06213> in

comparison of you? Then <0227> their anger <07307> was abated

<07503> toward him, when he had said <01696> that.

 4. And Gideon <01439> came <0935> to Jordan <03383>, [and]

passed <05674> over <05674>, he, and the three <07969> hundred

<03967> men <0376> that [were] with him, faint <05889>, yet

pursuing <07291> [them].

5  And he said <0559> unto the men <0582> of Succoth <05523>,

Give <05414>, I pray <04994> you, loaves <03603> of bread

<03899> unto the people <05971> that follow <07272> me; for they

[be] faint <05889>, and I am pursuing <07291> after <0310> Zebah

<02078> and Zalmunna <06759>, kings <04428> of Midian <04080>.

6  And the princes <08269> of Succoth <05523> said <0559>,

[Are] the hands <03709> of Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759>

now <06258> in thine hand <03027>, that we should give <05414>

bread <03899> unto thine army <06635>?

7  And Gideon <01439> said <0559>, Therefore when the LORD

<03068> hath delivered <05414> Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna

<06759> into mine hand <03027>, then I will tear <01758> your

flesh <01320> with the thorns <06975> of the wilderness <04057>

and with briers <01303>.

8  And he went <05927> up thence <08033> to Penuel <06439>, and

spake <01696> unto them likewise <02063>: and the men <0582> of

Penuel <06439> answered <06030> him as the men <0582> of Succoth

<05523> had answered <06030> [him].

9  And he spake <0559> also <01571> unto the men <0582> of

Penuel <06439>, saying <0559>, When I come <07725> again <07725>

in peace <07965>, I will break <05422> down <05242> this tower

<04026>.

10  Now Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759> [were] in Karkor

<07174>, and their hosts <04264> with them, about fifteen

<06240> thousand <0505> [men], all <03605> that were left

<03498> of all <03605> the hosts <04264> of the children <01121>

of the east <06924>: for there fell <05307> an hundred <03967>

and twenty <06242> thousand <0505> men <0376> that drew <08025>

sword <02719>.

11  And Gideon <01439> went <05927> up by the way <01870> of

them that dwelt <07931> in tents <0168> on the east <06924> of

Nobah <05025> and Jogbehah <03011>, and smote <05221> the host

<04264>: for the host <04264> was secure <0983>.

12  And when Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759> fled <05127>,

he pursued <07291> after <0310> them, and took <03920> the two

<08147> kings <04428> of Midian <04080>, Zebah <02078> and

Zalmunna <06759>, and discomfited <02729> all <03605> the host

<04264>.

13  And Gideon <01439> the son <01121> of Joash <03101>

returned <07725> from battle <04421> before <04608> the sun

<02775> [was up],

14  And caught <03920> a young <05288> man of the men <0582> of

Succoth <05523>, and enquired <07592> of him: and he described

<03789> unto him the princes <08269> of Succoth <05523>, and the

elders <02205> thereof, [even] threescore <07657> and seventeen

<07657> men <0376>.

15  And he came <0935> unto the men <0582> of Succoth <05523>,

and said <0559>, Behold <02009> Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna

<06759>, with whom <0834> ye did upbraid <02778> me, saying

<0559>, [Are] the hands <03709> of Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna

<06759> now <06258> in thine hand <03027>, that we should give

<05414> bread <03899> unto thy men <0582> [that are] weary

<03286>?

16  And he took <03947> the elders <02205> of the city <05892>,

and thorns <06975> of the wilderness <04057> and briers <01303>,

and with them he taught <03045> the men <0582> of Succoth

<05523>.

17  And he beat <05422> down <05242> the tower <04026> of

Penuel <06439>, and slew <02026> the men <0582> of the city

<05892>.

 18. Then said <0559> he unto Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759>,

What <0375> manner of men <0582> [were they] whom <0834> ye

slew <02026> at Tabor <08396>? And they answered <0559>, As thou

[art], so <01992> [were] they; each one <0259> resembled <08389>

the children <01121> of a king <04428>.

19  And he said <0559>, They [were] my brethren <0251>, [even]

the sons <01121> of my mother <0517>: [as] the LORD <03068>

liveth <02416>, if <03863> ye had saved <02421> them alive

<02421>, I would not slay <02026> you.

20  And he said <0559> unto Jether <03500> his firstborn

<01060>, Up, [and] slay <02026> them. But the youth <05288> drew

<08025> not his sword <02719>: for he feared <03372>, because

<03588> he [was] yet <05750> a youth <05288>.

21  Then Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759> said <0559>, Rise

<06965> thou, and fall <06293> upon us: for as the man <0376>

[is, so is] his strength <01369>. And Gideon <01439> arose

<06965>, and slew <02026> Zebah <02078> and Zalmunna <06759>,

and took <03947> away the ornaments <07720> that [were] on their

camels <01581>' necks <06677>.

 22. Then the men <0376> of Israel <03478> said <0559> unto

Gideon <01439>, Rule <04910> thou over us, both <01571> thou,

and thy son <01121>, and thy son's <01121> son <01121> also

<01571>: for thou hast delivered <03467> us from the hand

<03027> of Midian <04080>.

23  And Gideon <01439> said <0559> unto them, I will not rule

<04910> over you, neither <03808> shall my son <01121> rule

<04910> over you: the LORD <03068> shall rule <04910> over you.

24  And Gideon <01439> said <0559> unto them, I would desire

<07592> a request <07596> of you, that ye would give <05414> me

every man <0376> the earrings <05141> of his prey <07998>. (For

they had golden <02091> earrings <05141>, because <03588> they

[were] Ishmaelites <03459>.)

25  And they answered <0559>, We will willingly <05414> give

<05414> [them]. And they spread <06566> a garment <08071>, and

did cast <07993> therein <08033> every man <0376> the earrings

<05141> of his prey <07998>.

26  And the weight <04948> of the golden <02091> earrings

<05141> that he requested <07592> was a thousand <0505> and

seven <07651> hundred <03967> [shekels] of gold <02091>; beside

<0905> ornaments <07720>, and collars <05188>, and purple <0713>

raiment <0899> that [was] on <05921> the kings <04428> of Midian

<04080>, and beside <0905> the chains <06060> that [were] about

their camels <01581>' necks <06677>.

27  And Gideon <01439> made <06213> an ephod <0646> thereof,

and put <03322> it in his city <05892>, [even] in Ophrah <06084>:

and all <03605> Israel <03478> went thither <08033> a whoring

<02181> after <0310> it: which thing became <01961> a snare

<04170> unto Gideon <01439>, and to his house <01004>.

28  Thus was Midian <04080> subdued <03665> before <06440> the

children <01121> of Israel <03478>, so that they lifted <05375>

up their heads <07218> no <03808> more <03254>. And the country

<0776> was in quietness <08252> forty <0705> years <08141> in

the days <03117> of Gideon <01439>.

 29. And Jerubbaal <03378> the son <01121> of Joash <03101> went

<03212> and dwelt <03427> in his own house <01004>.

30  And Gideon <01439> had threescore <07657> and ten sons

<01121> of his body <03409> begotten <03318>: for he had <01961>

many <07227> wives <0802>.

31  And his concubine <06370> that [was] in Shechem <07927>,

she also <01571> bare <03205> him a son <01121>, whose <0853>

name <08034> he called <07760> Abimelech <040>.

32  And Gideon <01439> the son <01121> of Joash <03101> died

<04191> in a good <02896> old <07872> age <07872>, and was

buried <06912> in the sepulchre <06913> of Joash <03101> his

father <01>, in Ophrah <06084> of the Abiezrites <033>.

33  And it came <01961> to pass, as soon <0834> as Gideon

<01439> was dead <04191>, that the children <01121> of Israel

<03478> turned <07725> again <07725>, and went a whoring <02181>

after <0310> Baalim <01168>, and made <07760> Baalberith <01170>

their god <0430>.

34  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> remembered

<02142> not the LORD <03068> their God <0430>, who had delivered

<05337> them out of the hands <03027> of all <03605> their

enemies <0341> on every <05437> side <05439>:

35  Neither <03808> shewed <06213> they kindness <02617> to the

house <01004> of Jerubbaal <03378>, [namely], Gideon <01439>,

according to all <03605> the goodness <02896> which <0835> he

had shewed <06213> unto Israel <03478>.

Judges   9

 1. And Abimelech <040> the son <01121> of Jerubbaal <03378>

went <03212> to Shechem <07927> unto his mother's <0517>

brethren <0251>, and communed <01696> with them, and with all

<03605> the family <04940> of the house <01004> of his mother's

<0517> father <01>, saying <0559>,

2  Speak <01696>, I pray <04994> you, in the ears <0241> of all

<03605> the men <01167> of Shechem <07927>, Whether <04100> [is]

better <02896> for you, either that all <03605> the sons <01121>

of Jerubbaal <03378>, [which are] threescore <07657> and ten

persons <0376>, reign <04910> over you, or that one <0259> reign

<04910> over you? remember <02142> also that I [am] your bone

<06106> and your flesh <01320>.

 3  And his mother's <0517> brethren <0251> spake <01696> of him

in the ears <0241> of all <03605> the men <01167> of Shechem

<07927> all <03605> these <0428> words <01697>: and their hearts

<03820> inclined <05186> to follow Abimelech <040>; for they

said <0559>, He [is] our brother <0251>.

4  And they gave <05414> him threescore <07657> and ten

[pieces] of silver <03701> out of the house <01004> of

Baalberith <01170>, wherewith Abimelech <040> hired <07936> vain

<07386> and light <06348> persons <0582>, which followed him.

 5  And he went <0935> unto his father's <01> house <01004> at

Ophrah <06084>, and slew <02026> his brethren <0251> the sons

<01121> of Jerubbaal <03378>, [being] threescore <07657> and ten

persons <0376>, upon one <0259> stone <068>: notwithstanding yet

Jotham <03147> the youngest <06996> son <01121> of Jerubbaal

<03378> was left <03498>; for he hid <02244> himself.

6  And all <03605> the men <01167> of Shechem <07927> gathered

<0622> together, and all <03605> the house <01004> of Millo

<04407>, and went <03212>, and made Abimelech <040> king <04428>,

by the plain <0436> of the pillar <05324> that [was] in Shechem

<07927>.

 7. And when they told <05046> [it] to Jotham <03147>, he went

<03212> and stood <05975> in the top <07218> of mount <02022>

Gerizim <01630>, and lifted <05375> up his voice <06963>, and

cried <07121>, and said <0559> unto them, Hearken <08085> unto

me, ye men <01167> of Shechem <07927>, that God <0430> may

hearken <08085> unto you.

8  The trees <06086> went <01980> forth [on a time] to anoint

<04886> a king <04428> over <05921> them; and they said <0559>

unto the olive <02132> tree, Reign <04427> thou over <05921> us.

9  But the olive <02132> tree said <0559> unto them, Should I

leave <02308> my fatness <01880>, wherewith <0834> by me they

honour <03513> God <0430> and man <0376>, and go <01980> to be

promoted <05128> over <05921> the trees <06086>?

10  And the trees <06086> said <0559> to the fig <08384> tree

<06086>, Come <03212> thou, [and] reign <04427> over <05921> us.

11  But the fig <08384> tree <06086> said <0559> unto them,

Should I forsake <02308> my sweetness <04987>, and my good

<02896> fruit <08270>, and go <01980> to be promoted <05128>

over <05921> the trees <06086>?

12  Then said <0559> the trees <06086> unto the vine <01612>,

Come <03212> thou, [and] reign <04427> over <05921> us.

13  And the vine <01612> said <0559> unto them, Should I leave

<02308> my wine <08492>, which cheereth <08055> God <0430> and

man <0376>, and go <01980> to be promoted <05128> over <05921>

the trees <06086>?

14  Then said <0559> all <03605> the trees <06086> unto the

bramble <0329>, Come <03212> thou, [and] reign <04427> over

<05921> us.

15  And the bramble <0329> said <0559> unto the trees <06086>,

If <0518> in truth <0571> ye anoint <04886> me king <04428> over

<05921> you, [then] come <0935> [and] put your trust <02620> in

my shadow <06738>: and if <0518> not, let fire <0784> come

<03318> out of the bramble <0329>, and devour <0398> the cedars

<0730> of Lebanon <03844>.

16  Now <06258> therefore, if <0518> ye have done <06213> truly

<0571> and sincerely <08549>, in that ye have made Abimelech

<040> king <04427>, and if <0518> ye have dealt <06213> well

<02895> with Jerubbaal <03378> and his house <01004>, and have

done <06213> unto him according to the deserving <01576> of his

hands <03027>;

17  (For my father <01> fought <03898> for you, and adventured

<07993> his life <05315> far <05048>, and delivered <05337> you

out of the hand <03027> of Midian <04080>:

18  And ye are risen <06965> up against <05921> my father's

<01> house <01004> this day <03117>, and have slain <02026> his

sons <01121>, threescore <07657> and ten persons <0376>, upon

one <0259> stone <068>, and have made Abimelech <040>, the son

<01121> of his maidservant <0519>, king <04427> over <05921> the

men <01167> of Shechem <07927>, because <03588> he [is] your

brother <0251>;)

19  If <0518> ye then have dealt <06213> truly <0571> and

sincerely <08549> with Jerubbaal <03378> and with his house

<01004> this <02088> day <03117>, [then] rejoice <08055> ye in

Abimelech <040>, and let him also <01571> rejoice <08055> in you:

20  But if <0518> not, let fire <0784> come <03318> out from

Abimelech <040>, and devour <0398> the men <01167> of Shechem

<07927>, and the house <01004> of Millo <04407>; and let fire

<0784> come <03318> out from the men <01167> of Shechem <07927>,

and from the house <01004> of Millo <04407>, and devour <0398>

Abimelech <040>.

21  And Jotham <03147> ran <07323> away, and fled <01272>, and

went <03212> to Beer <0876>, and dwelt <03427> there <08033>,

for fear <06440> of Abimelech <040> his brother <0251>.

 22. When Abimelech <040> had reigned <07786> three <07969>

years <08141> over <05921> Israel <03478>,

 23  Then God <0430> sent <07971> an evil <07451> spirit <07307>

between <0996> Abimelech <040> and the men <01167> of Shechem

<07927>; and the men <01167> of Shechem <07927> dealt

treacherously <0898> with Abimelech <040>:

24  That the cruelty <02555> [done] to the threescore <07657>

and ten sons <01121> of Jerubbaal <03378> might come <0935>, and

their blood <01818> be laid <07760> upon Abimelech <040> their

brother <0251>, which <0834> slew <02026> them; and upon the men

<01167> of Shechem <07927>, which <0834> aided him in the

killing <02026> of his brethren <0251>.

25  And the men <01167> of Shechem <07927> set <07760> liers in

wait <0693> for him in the top <07218> of the mountains <02022>,

and they robbed <01497> all <03605> that came <05674> along that

way <01870> by them: and it was told <05046> Abimelech <040>.

26  And Gaal <01603> the son <01121> of Ebed <05651> came

<0935> with his brethren <0251>, and went <05674> over <05674>

to Shechem <07927>: and the men <01167> of Shechem <07927> put

their confidence <0982> in him.

27  And they went <03318> out into the fields <07704>, and

gathered <01219> their vineyards <03754>, and trode <01869> [the

grapes], and made <06213> merry <01974>, and went <0935> into

the house <01004> of their god <0430>, and did eat <0398> and

drink <08354>, and cursed <07043> Abimelech <040>.

28  And Gaal <01603> the son <01121> of Ebed <05651> said

<0559>, Who <04310> [is] Abimelech <040>, and who <04310> [is]

Shechem <07927>, that we should serve <05647> him? [is] not [he]

the son <01121> of Jerubbaal <03378>? and Zebul <02083> his

officer <06496>? serve <05647> the men <0582> of Hamor <02544>

the father <01> of Shechem <07927>: for why <04100> should we

serve <05647> him?

29  And would to God this <02088> people <05971> were under my

hand <03027>! then would I remove <05493> Abimelech <040>. And

he said <0559> to Abimelech <040>, Increase <07239> thine army

<06635>, and come <03318> out.

30  And when Zebul <02083> the ruler <08269> of the city

<05892> heard <08085> the words <01697> of Gaal <01603> the son

<01121> of Ebed <05651>, his anger <0639> was kindled <02734>.

31  And he sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto Abimelech <040>

privily <08649>, saying <0559>, Behold <02009>, Gaal <01603> the

son <01121> of Ebed <05651> and his brethren <0251> be come

<0935> to Shechem <07927>; and, behold <02009>, they fortify

<06696> the city <05892> against <05921> thee.

32  Now <06258> therefore up by night <03915>, thou and the

people <05971> that [is] with thee, and lie in wait <0693> in

the field <07704>:

33  And it shall be, [that] in the morning <01242>, as soon as

the sun <08121> is up, thou shalt rise <07925> early <07925>,

and set <06584> upon the city <05892>: and, behold <02009>,

[when] he and the people <05971> that [is] with him come <03318>

out against <0413> thee, then mayest thou do <06213> to them as

thou shalt find <04672> occasion <04672>.

34  And Abimelech <040> rose <06965> up, and all <03605> the

people <05971> that [were] with him, by night <03915>, and they

laid wait <0693> against <05921> Shechem <07927> in four <0702>

companies <07218>.

35  And Gaal <01603> the son <01121> of Ebed <05651> went

<03318> out, and stood <05975> in the entering <06607> of the

gate <08179> of the city <05892>: and Abimelech <040> rose

<06965> up, and the people <05971> that [were] with him, from

lying in wait <03993>.

36  And when Gaal <01603> saw <07200> the people <05971>, he

said <0559> to Zebul <02083>, Behold <02009>, there come <03381>

people <05971> down <03381> from the top <07218> of the

mountains <02022>. And Zebul <02083> said <0559> unto him, Thou

seest <07200> the shadow <06738> of the mountains <02022> as [if

they were] men <0582>.

37  And Gaal <01603> spake <01696> again and said <0559>, See

<02009> there come <03381> people <05971> down <03381> by the

middle <02872> of the land <0776>, and another <0259> company

<07218> come <0935> along by the plain <0436> of Meonenim

<06049>.

38  Then said <0559> Zebul <02083> unto him, Where <0346> [is]

now <0645> thy mouth <06310>, wherewith <0834> thou saidst

<0559>, Who <04310> [is] Abimelech <040>, that we should serve

<05647> him? [is] not this <02088> the people <05971> that thou

hast despised <03988>? go <03318> out, I pray <04994> now

<06258>, and fight <03898> with them.

39  And Gaal <01603> went <03318> out before <06440> the men

<01167> of Shechem <07927>, and fought <03898> with Abimelech

<040>.

40  And Abimelech <040> chased <07291> him, and he fled <05127>

before <06440> him, and many <07227> were overthrown <05307>

[and] wounded <02491>, [even] unto the entering <06607> of the

gate <08179>.

41  And Abimelech <040> dwelt <03427> at Arumah <0725>: and

Zebul <02083> thrust <01644> out Gaal <01603> and his brethren

<0251>, that they should not dwell <03427> in Shechem <07927>.

42  And it came <01961> to pass on the morrow <04283>, that the

people <05971> went <03318> out into the field <07704>; and they

told <05046> Abimelech <040>.

43  And he took <03947> the people <05971>, and divided <02673>

them into three <07969> companies <07218>, and laid wait <0693>

in the field <07704>, and looked <07200>, and, behold <02009>,

the people <05971> [were] come <03318> forth <03318> out of the

city <05892>; and he rose <06965> up against <05921> them, and

smote <05221> them.

44  And Abimelech <040>, and the company <07218> that [was]

with him, rushed <06584> forward <06584>, and stood <05975> in

the entering <06607> of the gate <08179> of the city <05892>:

and the two <08147> [other] companies <07218> ran <06584> upon

all <03605> [the people] that [were] in the fields <07704>, and

slew <05221> them.

45  And Abimelech <040> fought <03898> against the city <05892>

all <03605> that day <03117>; and he took <03920> the city

<05892>, and slew <02026> the people <05971> that [was] therein,

and beat <05422> down <05422> the city <05892>, and sowed

<02232> it with salt <04417>.

46  And when all <03605> the men <01167> of the tower <04026>

of Shechem <07927> heard <08085> [that], they entered <0935>

into <0413> an hold <06877> of the house <01004> of the god

<0410> Berith <01286>.

47  And it was told <05046> Abimelech <040>, that all <03605>

the men <01167> of the tower <04026> of Shechem <07927> were

gathered <06908> together.

48  And Abimelech <040> gat <05927> him up to mount <02022>

Zalmon <06756>, he and all <03605> the people <05971> that

[were] with him; and Abimelech <040> took <03947> an axe <07134>

in his hand <03027>, and cut <03772> down <03381> a bough

<07754> from the trees <06086>, and took <05375> it, and laid

<07760> [it] on <05921> his shoulder <07926>, and said <0559>

unto the people <05971> that [were] with him, What <04100> ye

have seen <07200> me do <06213>, make haste <04116>, [and] do

<06213> as I [have done].

49  And all <03605> the people <05971> likewise <01571> cut

<03772> down <03381> every man <0376> his bough <07754>, and

followed Abimelech <040>, and put <07760> [them] to the hold

<06877>, and set the hold <06877> on fire <0784> upon them; so

that all <03605> the men <0582> of the tower <04026> of Shechem

<07927> died <04191> also <01571>, about a thousand <0505> men

<0376> and women <0802>.

 50. Then went <03212> Abimelech <040> to Thebez <08405>, and

encamped <02583> against <0413> Thebez <08405>, and took <03920>

it.

 51  But there was a strong <05797> tower <04026> within <08432>

the city <05892>, and thither <08033> fled <05127> all <03605>

the men <0582> and women <0802>, and all <03605> they of the

city <05892>, and shut <05462> [it] to them, and gat <05927>

them up to the top <01406> of the tower <04026>.

52  And Abimelech <040> came <0935> unto the tower <04026>, and

fought <03898> against it, and went <05066> hard <05066> unto

the door <06607> of the tower <04026> to burn <08313> it with

fire <0784>.

 53  And a certain <0259> woman <0802> cast <07993> a piece

<06400> of a millstone <07393> upon Abimelech's <040> head

<07218>, and all to brake <07533> his skull <01538>.

54  Then he called <07121> hastily <04120> unto the young

<05288> man his armourbearer <03627>, and said <0559> unto him,

Draw <08025> thy sword <02719>, and slay <04191> me, that men

say <0559> not of me, A woman <0802> slew <02026> him. And his

young <05288> man thrust <01856> him through, and he died

<04191>.

55  And when the men <0376> of Israel <03478> saw <07200> that

Abimelech <040> was dead <04191>, they departed <03212> every

man <0376> unto his place <04725>.

56  Thus God <0430> rendered <07725> the wickedness <07451> of

Abimelech <040>, which <0834> he did <06213> unto his father

<01>, in slaying <02026> his seventy <07657> brethren <0251>:

57  And all <03605> the evil <07451> of the men <0582> of

Shechem <07927> did God <0430> render <07725> upon their heads

<07218>: and upon them came <0935> the curse <07045> of Jotham

<03147> the son <01121> of Jerubbaal <03378>.

Judges  10

 1. And after <0310> Abimelech <040> there arose <06965> to

defend <03467> Israel <03478> Tola <08439> the son <01121> of

Puah <06312>, the son <01121> of Dodo <01734>, a man <0376> of

Issachar <03485>; and he dwelt <03427> in Shamir <08069> in

mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>.

2  And he judged <08199> Israel <03478> twenty <06242> and

three <07969> years <08141>, and died <04191>, and was buried

<06912> in Shamir <08069>.

 3  And after <0310> him arose <06965> Jair <02971>, a Gileadite

<01569>, and judged <08199> Israel <03478> twenty <06242> and

two <08147> years <08141>.

4  And he had <01961> thirty <07970> sons <01121> that rode

<07392> on <05921> thirty <07970> ass <05895> colts <05895>, and

they had thirty <07970> cities <05892>, which are called <07121>

Havothjair <02334> unto this <02088> day <03117>, which <0834>

[are] in the land <0776> of Gilead <01568>.

5  And Jair <02971> died <04191>, and was buried <06912> in

Camon <07056>.

 6. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> again <03254> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>,

and served <05647> Baalim <01168>, and Ashtaroth <06252>, and

the gods <0430> of Syria <0758>, and the gods <0430> of Zidon

<06721>, and the gods <0430> of Moab <04124>, and the gods

<0430> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>, and the gods

<0430> of the Philistines <06430>, and forsook <05800> the LORD

<03068>, and served <05647> not him.

7  And the anger <0639> of the LORD <03068> was hot <02734>

against Israel <03478>, and he sold <04376> them into the hands

<03027> of the Philistines <06430>, and into the hands <03027>

of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

8  And that year <08141> they vexed <07492> and oppressed

<07533> the children <01121> of Israel <03478>: eighteen years

<08141>, all <03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478> that

[were] on the other <05676> side <05676> Jordan <03383> in the

land <0776> of the Amorites <0567>, which <0834> [is] in Gilead

<01568>.

9  Moreover the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> passed

<05674> over <05674> Jordan <03383> to fight <03898> also

<01571> against Judah <03063>, and against Benjamin <01144>, and

against the house <01004> of Ephraim <0669>; so that Israel

<03478> was sore <03966> distressed <03334>.

 10. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> cried <02199>

unto the LORD <03068>, saying <0559>, We have sinned <02398>

against thee, both because <03588> we have forsaken <05800> our

God <0430>, and also served <05647> Baalim <01168>.

11  And the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto the children <01121>

of Israel <03478>, [Did] not [I deliver you] from the Egyptians

<04714>, and from the Amorites <0567>, from the children <01121>

of Ammon <05983>, and from the Philistines <06430>?

12  The Zidonians <06722> also <01571>, and the Amalekites

<06003>, and the Maonites <04584>, did oppress <03905> you; and

ye cried <06817> to me, and I delivered <03467> you out of their

hand <03027>.

13  Yet ye have forsaken <05800> me, and served <05647> other

<0312> gods <0430>: wherefore <03651> I will deliver <03467> you

no <03808> more <03254>.

14  Go <03212> and cry <02199> unto the gods <0430> which

<0834> ye have chosen <0977>; let them deliver <03467> you in

the time <06256> of your tribulation <06869>.

15  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> said <0559> unto

the LORD <03068>, We have sinned <02398>: do <06213> thou unto

us whatsoever <03605> seemeth <05869> good <02896> unto thee;

deliver <05337> us only <0389>, we pray <04994> thee, this

<02088> day <03117>.

16  And they put <05493> away <05493> the strange <05236> gods

<0430> from among <07130> them, and served <05647> the LORD

<03068>: and his soul <05315> was grieved <07114> for the misery

<05999> of Israel <03478>.

17  Then the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> were gathered

<06817> together, and encamped <02583> in Gilead <01568>. And

the children <01121> of Israel <03478> assembled <0622>

themselves together, and encamped <02583> in Mizpeh <04709>.

18  And the people <05971> [and] princes <08269> of Gilead

<01568> said <0559> one <0376> to another <07453>, What <04310>

man <0376> [is he] that will begin <02490> to fight <03898>

against the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>? he shall be head

<07218> over all <03605> the inhabitants <03427> of Gilead

<01568>.

Judges  11

 1. Now Jephthah <03316> the Gileadite <01569> was a mighty

<01368> man of valour <02428>, and he [was] the son <01121> of

an harlot <02181>: and Gilead <01568> begat <03205> Jephthah

<03316>.

 2  And Gilead's <01568> wife <0802> bare <03205> him sons

<01121>; and his wife's <0802> sons <01121> grew <01431> up, and

they thrust <01644> out Jephthah <03316>, and said <0559> unto

him, Thou shalt not inherit <05157> in our father's <01> house

<01004>; for thou [art] the son <01121> of a strange <0312>

woman <0802>.

3  Then Jephthah <03316> fled <01272> from his brethren <0251>,

and dwelt <03427> in the land <0776> of Tob <02897>: and there

were gathered <03950> vain <07386> men <0582> to Jephthah

<03316>, and went <03318> out with him.

 4. And it came <01961> to pass in process of time <03117>, that

the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> made war <03898> against

<05973> Israel <03478>.

5  And it was so, that when <0834> the children <01121> of

Ammon <05983> made war <03898> against <05973> Israel <03478>,

the elders <02205> of Gilead <01568> went <03212> to fetch

<03947> Jephthah <03316> out of the land <0776> of Tob <02897>:

6  And they said <0559> unto Jephthah <03316>, Come <03212>,

and be our captain <07101>, that we may fight <03898> with the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

7  And Jephthah <03316> said <0559> unto the elders <02205> of

Gilead <01568>, Did not ye hate <08130> me, and expel <01644> me

out of my father's <01> house <01004>? and why <04069> are ye

come <0935> unto me now <06258> when <0834> ye are in distress

<06887>?

8  And the elders <02205> of Gilead <01568> said <0559> unto

Jephthah <03316>, Therefore we turn <07725> again <07725> to

thee now <06258>, that thou mayest go <01980> with us, and fight

<03898> against the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>, and be

our head <07218> over all <03605> the inhabitants <03427> of

Gilead <01568>.

9  And Jephthah <03316> said <0559> unto the elders <02205> of

Gilead <01568>, If <0518> ye bring <07725> me home <07725> again

<07725> to fight <03898> against the children <01121> of Ammon

<05983>, and the LORD <03068> deliver <05414> them before

<06440> me, shall I be your head <07218>?

10  And the elders <02205> of Gilead <01568> said <0559> unto

Jephthah <03316>, The LORD <03068> be witness <08085> between

<0996> us, if <0518> we do <06213> not so <03651> according to

thy words <01697>.

11  Then Jephthah <03316> went <03212> with the elders <02205>

of Gilead <01568>, and the people <05971> made <07760> him head

<07218> and captain <07101> over <05921> them: and Jephthah

<03316> uttered <01696> all <03605> his words <01697> before

<06440> the LORD <03068> in Mizpeh <04709>.

 12. And Jephthah <03316> sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

the king <04428> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>,

saying <0559>, What <04100> hast thou to do with me, that thou

art come <0935> against <0413> me to fight <03898> in my land

<0776>?

13  And the king <04428> of the children <01121> of Ammon

<05983> answered <0559> unto the messengers <04397> of Jephthah

<03316>, Because <03588> Israel <03478> took <03947> away my

land <0776>, when they came <05927> up out of Egypt <04714>,

from Arnon <0769> even unto Jabbok <02999>, and unto Jordan

<03383>: now <06258> therefore restore <07725> those [lands]

again <07725> peaceably <07965>.

 14  And Jephthah <03316> sent <07971> messengers <04397> again

unto the king <04428> of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>:

15  And said <0559> unto him, Thus <03541> saith <0559>

Jephthah <03316>, Israel <03478> took <03947> not away the land

<0776> of Moab <04124>, nor the land <0776> of the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>:

16  But when Israel <03478> came <05927> up from Egypt <04714>,

and walked <03212> through the wilderness <04057> unto the Red

<05488> sea <03220>, and came <0935> to Kadesh <06946>;

 17  Then Israel <03478> sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

the king <04428> of Edom <0123>, saying <0559>, Let me, I pray

<04994> thee, pass <05674> through thy land <0776>: but the king

<04428> of Edom <0123> would not hearken <08085> [thereto]. And

in like <01571> manner they sent <07971> unto the king <04428>

of Moab <04124>: but he would <014> not [consent <014>]: and

Israel <03478> abode <03427> in Kadesh <06946>.

18  Then they went <03212> along through the wilderness <04057>,

and compassed <05437> the land <0776> of Edom <0123>, and the

land <0776> of Moab <04124>, and came <0935> by the east side of

the land <0776> of Moab <04124>, and pitched <02583> on the

other <05676> side <05676> of Arnon <0769>, but came <0935> not

within the border <01366> of Moab <04124>: for Arnon <0769>

[was] the border <01366> of Moab <04124>.

 19  And Israel <03478> sent <07971> messengers <04397> unto

Sihon <05511> king <04428> of the Amorites <0567>, the king

<04428> of Heshbon <02809>; and Israel <03478> said <0559> unto

him, Let us pass <05674>, we pray <04994> thee, through thy land

<0776> into <05704> my place <04725>.

20  But Sihon <05511> trusted <0539> not Israel <03478> to pass

<05674> through his coast <01366>: but Sihon <05511> gathered

<0622> all <03605> his people <05971> together, and pitched

<02583> in Jahaz <03096>, and fought <03898> against <05973>

Israel <03478>.

21  And the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478> delivered

<05414> Sihon <05511> and all <03605> his people <05971> into

the hand <03027> of Israel <03478>, and they smote <05221> them:

so Israel <03478> possessed <03423> all <03605> the land <0776>

of the Amorites <0567>, the inhabitants <03427> of that country

<0776>.

22  And they possessed <03423> all <03605> the coasts <01366>

of the Amorites <0567>, from Arnon <0769> even unto Jabbok

<02999>, and from the wilderness <04057> even unto Jordan

<03383>.

23  So now <06258> the LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel

<03478> hath dispossessed <03423> the Amorites <0567> from

before <06440> his people <05971> Israel <03478>, and shouldest

thou possess <03423> it?

24  Wilt not thou possess <03423> that which <0834> Chemosh

<03645> thy god <0430> giveth thee to possess <03423>? So

whomsoever the LORD <03068> our God <0430> shall drive <03423>

out from before <06440> us, them will we possess <03423>.

25  And now <06258> [art] thou any thing better <02896> than

Balak <01111> the son <01121> of Zippor <06834>, king <04428> of

Moab <04124>? did he ever strive <07378> against <05973> Israel

<03478>, or did he ever fight <03898> against <05973> them,

26  While Israel <03478> dwelt <03427> in Heshbon <02809> and

her towns <01323>, and in Aroer <06177> and her towns <01323>,

and in all <03605> the cities <05892> that [be] along by the

coasts <03027> of Arnon <0769>, three <07969> hundred <03967>

years <08141>? why <04069> therefore did ye not recover <05337>

[them] within that time <06256>?

27  Wherefore I have not sinned <02398> against thee, but thou

doest <06213> me wrong <07451> to war <03898> against me: the

LORD <03068> the Judge <08199> be judge <08199> this day <03117>

between <0996> the children <01121> of Israel <03478> and the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

28  Howbeit the king <04428> of the children <01121> of Ammon

<05983> hearkened <08085> not unto the words <01697> of Jephthah

<03316> which <0834> he sent <07971> him.

 29. Then the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came <01961>

upon Jephthah <03316>, and he passed <05674> over <05674> Gilead

<01568>, and Manasseh <04519>, and passed <05674> over <05674>

Mizpeh <04708> of Gilead <01568>, and from Mizpeh <04708> of

Gilead <01568> he passed <05674> over <05674> [unto] the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

 30  And Jephthah <03316> vowed <05087> a vow <05088> unto the

LORD <03068>, and said <0559>, If <0518> thou shalt without fail

deliver <05414> the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> into mine

hands <03027>,

31  Then it shall be, that whatsoever <0834> cometh <03318>

forth <03318> of the doors <01817> of my house <01004> to meet

<07125> me, when I return <07725> in peace <07965> from the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983>, shall surely be the LORD'S

<03068>, and I will offer <05927> it up for a burnt <05930>

offering.

32  So Jephthah <03316> passed <05674> over <05674> unto the

children <01121> of Ammon <05983> to fight <03898> against them;

and the LORD <03068> delivered <05414> them into his hands

<03027>.

33  And he smote <05221> them from Aroer <06177>, even till

<05704> thou come <0935> to Minnith <04511>, [even] twenty

<06242> cities <05892>, and unto the plain <058> of the

vineyards <03754>, with a very <03966> great <01419> slaughter

<04347>. Thus the children <01121> of Ammon <05983> were subdued

<03665> before <06440> the children <01121> of Israel <03478>.

34  And Jephthah <03316> came <0935> to Mizpeh <04709> unto his

house <01004>, and, behold <02009>, his daughter <01323> came

<03318> out to meet <07125> him with timbrels <08596> and with

dances <04246>: and she [was his] only <03173> child <03173>;

beside her he had neither <0369> son <01121> nor <0176> daughter

<01323>.

35  And it came <01961> to pass, when he saw <07200> her, that

he rent <07167> his clothes <0899>, and said <0559>, Alas <0160>,

my daughter <01323>! thou hast brought <03766> me very low

<03766>, and thou art one of them that trouble <05916> me: for I

have opened <06475> my mouth <06310> unto the LORD <03068>, and

I cannot go <07725> back <07725>.

36  And she said <0559> unto him, My father <01>, [if] thou

hast opened <06475> thy mouth <06310> unto the LORD <03068>, do

<06213> to me according to that which <0834> hath proceeded

<03318> out of thy mouth <06310>; forasmuch as the LORD <03068>

hath taken <06213> vengeance <05360> for thee of thine enemies

<0341>, [even] of the children <01121> of Ammon <05983>.

37  And she said <0559> unto her father <01>, Let this <02088>

thing <01697> be done <06213> for me: let me alone <07503> two

<08147> months <02320>, that I may go <03212> up and down

<03381> upon the mountains <02022>, and bewail <01058> my

virginity <01331>, I and my fellows <07464>.

38  And he said <0559>, Go <03212>. And he sent <07971> her

away [for] two <08147> months <02320>: and she went <03212> with

her companions <07464>, and bewailed <01058> her virginity

<01331> upon the mountains <02022>.

39  And it came <01961> to pass at the end <07093> of two

<08147> months <02320>, that she returned <07725> unto her

father <01>, who did <06213> with her [according] to his vow

<05088> which <0834> he had vowed <05087>: and she knew <03045>

no <03808> man <0376>. And it was a custom <02706> in Israel

<03478>,

40  [That] the daughters <01121> of Israel <03478> went <03212>

yearly <03117> to lament <08567> the daughter <01323> of

Jephthah <03316> the Gileadite <01569> four <0702> days <03117>

in a year <08141>.

Judges  12

 1. And the men <0376> of Ephraim <0669> gathered <06817>

themselves together, and went <05674> northward <06828>, and

said <0559> unto Jephthah <03316>, Wherefore <04069> passedst

<05674> thou over <05674> to fight <03898> against the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>, and didst <06213> not call <07121> us

to go <03212> with thee? we will burn <08313> thine house

<01004> upon thee with fire <0784>.

2  And Jephthah <03316> said <0559> unto them, I and my people

<05971> were at great <03699> strife <07379> with the children

<01121> of Ammon <05983>; and when I called <02199> you, ye

delivered <03467> me not out of their hands <03027>.

3  And when I saw <07200> that ye delivered <03467> [me] not, I

put <07760> my life <05315> in my hands <03709>, and passed

<05674> over <05674> against <0413> the children <01121> of

Ammon <05983>, and the LORD <03068> delivered <05414> them into

my hand <03027>: wherefore <04100> then are ye come <05927> up

unto me this <02088> day <03117>, to fight <03898> against me?

 4  Then Jephthah <03316> gathered <06908> together all <03605>

the men <0582> of Gilead <01568>, and fought <03898> with

Ephraim <0669>: and the men <0582> of Gilead <01568> smote

<05221> Ephraim <0669>, because <03588> they said <0559>, Ye

Gileadites <01569> [are] fugitives <06412> of Ephraim <0669>

among <08432> the Ephraimites <0669>, [and] among <08432> the

Manassites <04519>.

5  And the Gileadites <01569> took <03920> the passages <04569>

of Jordan <03383> before the Ephraimites <0669>: and it was [so],

that when those Ephraimites <0669> which were escaped <06412>

said <0559>, Let me go <05674> over <05674>; that the men <0582>

of Gilead <01568> said <0559> unto him, [Art] thou an Ephraimite

<0673>? If he said <0559>, Nay <03808>;

6  Then said <0559> they unto him, Say <0559> now <04994>

Shibboleth <07641>: and he said <0559> Sibboleth <05451>: for he

could not frame <03559> to pronounce <01696> [it] right <03651>.

Then they took <0270> him, and slew <07819> him at <0413> the

passages <04569> of Jordan <03383>: and there fell <05307> at

that time <06256> of the Ephraimites <0669> forty <0705> and two

<08147> thousand <0505>.

 7  And Jephthah <03316> judged <08199> Israel <03478> six

<08337> years <08141>. Then died <04191> Jephthah <03316> the

Gileadite <01569>, and was buried <06912> in [one of] the cities

<05892> of Gilead <01568>.

 8. And after <0310> him Ibzan <078> of Bethlehem <01035> judged

<08199> Israel <03478>.

9  And he had <01961> thirty <07970> sons <01121>, and thirty

<07970> daughters <01121>, [whom] he sent <07971> abroad <02351>,

and took <0935> in thirty <07970> daughters <01121> from abroad

<02351> for his sons <01121>. And he judged <08199> Israel

<03478> seven <07651> years <08141>.

10  Then died <04191> Ibzan <078>, and was buried <06912> at

Bethlehem <01035>.

 11  And after <0310> him Elon <0356>, a Zebulonite <02075>,

judged <08199> Israel <03478>; and he judged <08199> Israel

<03478> ten <06235> years <08141>.

12  And Elon <0356> the Zebulonite <02075> died <04191>, and

was buried <06912> in Aijalon <0357> in the country <0776> of

Zebulun <02074>.

13  And after <0310> him Abdon <05658> the son <01121> of

Hillel <01985>, a Pirathonite <06553>, judged <08199> Israel

<03478>.

14  And he had <01961> forty <0705> sons <01121> and thirty

<07970> nephews <01121>, that rode <07392> on <05921> threescore

<07657> and ten ass <05895> colts <05895>: and he judged <08199>

Israel <03478> eight <08083> years <08141>.

15  And Abdon <05658> the son <01121> of Hillel <01985> the

Pirathonite <06553> died <04191>, and was buried <06912> in

Pirathon <06552> in the land <0776> of Ephraim <0669>, in the

mount <02022> of the Amalekites <06003>.

Judges  13

 1. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> did <06213> evil

<07451> again <03254> in the sight <05869> of the LORD <03068>;

and the LORD <03068> delivered <05414> them into the hand

<03027> of the Philistines <06430> forty <0705> years <08141>.

 2  And there was a certain <0259> man <0376> of Zorah <06681>,

of the family <04940> of the Danites <01839>, whose name <08034>

[was] Manoah <04495>; and his wife <0802> [was] barren <06135>,

and bare <03205> not.

3  And the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> appeared <07200>

unto the woman <0802>, and said <0559> unto her, Behold <02009>

now <04994>, thou [art] barren <06135>, and bearest <03205> not:

but thou shalt conceive <02030>, and bear <03205> a son <01121>.

 4  Now <06258> therefore beware <08104>, I pray <04994> thee,

and drink <08354> not wine <03196> nor strong drink <07941>, and

eat <0398> not any <03605> unclean <02931> [thing]:

5  For, lo <02009>, thou shalt conceive <02030>, and bear

<03205> a son <01121>; and no <03808> razor <04177> shall come

<05927> on <05921> his head <07218>: for the child <05288> shall

be a Nazarite <05139> unto God <0430> from the womb <0990>: and

he shall begin <02490> to deliver <03467> Israel <03478> out of

the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>.

6  Then the woman <0802> came <0935> and told <0559> her

husband <0376>, saying <0559>, A man <0376> of God <0430> came

<0935> unto me, and his countenance <04758> [was] like the

countenance <04758> of an angel <04397> of God <0430>, very

<03966> terrible <03372>: but I asked <07592> him not whence he

[was], neither <03808> told <05046> he me his name <08034>:

7  But he said <0559> unto me, Behold <02009>, thou shalt

conceive <02030>, and bear <03205> a son <01121>; and now

<06258> drink <07941> no <0408> wine <03196> nor strong drink

<08354>, neither <0408> eat <0398> any <03605> unclean <02932>

[thing]: for the child <05288> shall be a Nazarite <05139> to

God <0430> from the womb <0990> to the day <03117> of his death

<04194>.

 8. Then Manoah <04495> intreated <06279> the LORD <03068>, and

said <0559>, O my Lord <03068>, let the man <0376> of God <0430>

which <0834> thou didst <06213> send <07971> come <0935> again

<05750> unto us, and teach <03384> us what <04100> we shall do

<06213> unto the child <05288> that shall be born <03205>.

9  And God <0430> hearkened <08085> to the voice <06963> of

Manoah <04495>; and the angel <04397> of God <0430> came <0935>

again <05750> unto the woman <0802> as she sat <03427> in the

field <07704>: but Manoah <04495> her husband <0376> [was] not

with her.

10  And the woman <0802> made haste <04116>, and ran <07323>,

and shewed <05046> her husband <0376>, and said <0559> unto him,

Behold <02009>, the man <0376> hath appeared <07200> unto me,

that came <0935> unto me the [other] day <03117>.

11  And Manoah <04495> arose <06965>, and went <03212> after

<0310> his wife <0802>, and came <0935> to the man <0376>, and

said <0559> unto him, [Art] thou the man <0376> that spakest

<01696> unto the woman <0802>? And he said <0559>, I [am].

12  And Manoah <04495> said <0559>, Now <06258> let thy words

<01697> come <0935> to pass <0935>. How <04100> shall we order

<04941> the child <05288>, and [how] shall we do <04640> unto

him?

13  And the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto

Manoah <04495>, Of all <03605> that I said <0559> unto the woman

<0802> let her beware <08104>.

14  She may not eat <0398> of any <03605> [thing] that cometh

<03318> of the vine <01612>, neither <0408> let her drink

<08354> wine <03196> or strong drink <07941>, nor <0408> eat

<0398> any <03605> unclean <02932> [thing]: all <03605> that I

commanded <06680> her let her observe <08104>.

 15. And Manoah <04495> said <0559> unto the angel <04397> of

the LORD <03068>, I pray <04994> thee, let us detain <06113>

thee, until <05704> we shall have made <06213> ready a kid for

thee.

16  And the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto

Manoah <04495>, Though <0518> thou detain <06113> me, I will not

eat <0398> of thy bread <03899>: and if <0518> thou wilt offer

<06213> a burnt <05930> offering, thou must offer <05927> it

unto the LORD <03068>. For Manoah <04495> knew <03045> not that

he [was] an angel <04397> of the LORD <03068>.

17  And Manoah <04495> said <0559> unto the angel <04397> of

the LORD <03068>, What <04310> [is] thy name <08034>, that when

<03588> thy sayings <01697> come <0935> to pass <0935> we may do

thee honour <03513>?

18  And the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> said <0559> unto

him, Why <04100> askest <07592> thou thus <02088> after my name

<08034>, seeing it [is] secret <06383>?

 19  So Manoah <04495> took <03947> a kid with a meat offering

<04503>, and offered <05927> [it] upon a rock <06697> unto the

LORD <03068>: and [the angel] did <06213> wondrously <06381>;

and Manoah <04495> and his wife <0802> looked <07200> on.

20  For it came <01961> to pass, when the flame <03851> went

<05927> up toward heaven <08064> from off <05921> the altar

<04196>, that the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> ascended

<05927> in the flame <03851> of the altar <04196>. And Manoah

<04495> and his wife <0802> looked <07200> on [it], and fell

<05307> on <05921> their faces <06440> to the ground <0776>.

21  But the angel <04397> of the LORD <03068> did no <03808>

more <03254> appear <07200> to Manoah <04495> and to his wife

<0802>. Then <0227> Manoah <04495> knew <03045> that he [was] an

angel <04397> of the LORD <03068>.

22  And Manoah <04495> said <0559> unto his wife <0802>, We

shall surely die <04191>, because <03588> we have seen <07200>

God <0430>.

23  But his wife <0802> said <0559> unto him, If <03863> the

LORD <03068> were pleased <02654> to kill <04191> us, he would

not have received <03947> a burnt <05930> offering and a meat

offering <04503> at our hands <03027>, neither <03808> would he

have shewed <07200> us all <03605> these <0428> [things], nor

<03908> would as at this time <06256> have told <08085> us [such

things] as these <02063>.

 24. And the woman <0802> bare <03205> a son <01121>, and called

<07121> his name <08034> Samson <08123>: and the child <05288>

grew <01431>, and the LORD <03068> blessed <01288> him.

25  And the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> began <02490> to

move <06470> him at times in the camp <04264> of Dan <01835>

between <0996> Zorah <06681> and Eshtaol <0847>.

Judges  14

 1. And Samson <08123> went <03381> down <03381> to Timnath

<08553>, and saw <07200> a woman <0802> in Timnath <08553> of

the daughters <01121> of the Philistines <06430>.

2  And he came <05927> up, and told <05046> his father <01> and

his mother <0517>, and said <0559>, I have seen <07200> a woman

<0802> in Timnath <08553> of the daughters <01121> of the

Philistines <06430>: now <06258> therefore get <03947> her for

me to wife <0802>.

3  Then his father <01> and his mother <0517> said <0559> unto

him, [Is there] never <0369> a woman <0802> among the daughters

<01121> of thy brethren <0251>, or among all <03605> my people

<05971>, that thou goest <01980> to take <03947> a wife <0802>

of the uncircumcised <06189> Philistines <06430>? And Samson

<08123> said <0559> unto his father <01>, Get <03947> her for me;

 for she pleaseth me well.

4  But his father <01> and his mother <0517> knew <03045> not

that it [was] of the LORD <03068>, that he sought <01245> an

occasion <08385> against the Philistines <06430>: for at that

time <06256> the Philistines <06430> had dominion <04910> over

Israel <03478>.

5  Then went <03381> Samson <08123> down <03381>, and his

father <01> and his mother <0517>, to Timnath <08553>, and came

<0935> to the vineyards <03754> of Timnath <08553>: and, behold

<02009>, a young <03715> lion <0738> roared <07580> against

<07125> him.

6  And the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came <06743>

mightily upon him, and he rent <08156> him as he would have rent

<08156> a kid <01423>, and [he had] nothing in his hand <03027>:

but he told <05046> not his father <01> or his mother <0517>

what he had done <06213>.

7  And he went <03381> down <03381>, and talked <01696> with

the woman <0802>; and she pleased Samson <08123> well.

 8  And after a time <03117> he returned <07725> to take <03947>

her, and he turned <05493> aside to see <07200> the carcase

<04658> of the lion <0738>: and, behold <02009>, [there was] a

swarm <05712> of bees <01682> and honey <01706> in the carcase

<01472> of the lion <0738>.

9  And he took <07287> thereof in his hands <03709>, and went

<03212> on eating <0398>, and came <01980> to his father <01>

and mother <0517>, and he gave <05414> them, and they did eat

<0398>: but he told <05046> not them that he had taken <07287>

the honey <01706> out of the carcase <01472> of the lion <0738>.

 10. So his father <01> went <03381> down <03381> unto the woman

<0802>: and Samson <08123> made <06213> there <08033> a feast

<04960>; for so <03651> used the young <0970> men to do <06213>.

11  And it came <01961> to pass, when they saw <07200> him,

that they brought <03947> thirty <07970> companions <04828> to

be with him.

12  And Samson <08123> said <0559> unto them, I will now

<04994> put <02330> forth <02330> a riddle <02420> unto you: if

<0518> ye can certainly declare <05046> it me within the seven

<07651> days <03117> of the feast <04960>, and find <04672> [it]

out, then I will give <05414> you thirty <07970> sheets <05466>

and thirty <07970> change <02487> of garments <0899>:

13  But if <0518> ye cannot declare <05046> [it] me, then shall

ye give <05414> me thirty <07970> sheets <05466> and thirty

<07970> change <02487> of garments <0899>. And they said <0559>

unto him, Put <02330> forth <02330> thy riddle <02420>, that we

may hear <08085> it.

14  And he said <0559> unto them, Out of the eater <0398> came

<03318> forth <03318> meat <03978>, and out of the strong

<05794> came <03318> forth <03318> sweetness <04966>. And they

could <03201> not in three <07969> days <03117> expound <05046>

the riddle <02420>.

15  And it came <01961> to pass on the seventh <07637> day

<03117>, that they said <0559> unto Samson's <08123> wife <0802>,

Entice <06601> thy husband <0376>, that he may declare <05046>

unto us the riddle <02420>, lest <06435> we burn <08313> thee

and thy father's <01> house <01004> with fire <0784>: have ye

called <07121> us to take <03423> that we have? [is it] not [so]?

 16  And Samson's <08123> wife <0802> wept <01058> before

<05921> him, and said <0559>, Thou dost but hate <08130> me, and

lovest <0157> me not: thou hast put <02330> forth <02330> a

riddle <02420> unto the children <01121> of my people <05971>,

and hast not told <05046> [it] me. And he said <0559> unto her,

Behold <02009>, I have not told <05046> [it] my father <01> nor

<03908> my mother <0517>, and shall I tell <05046> [it] thee?

17  And she wept <01058> before <05921> him the seven <07651>

days <03117>, while their feast <04960> lasted <01961>: and it

came <01961> to pass on the seventh <07637> day <03117>, that he

told <05046> her, because <03588> she lay sore upon him: and she

told <05046> the riddle <02420> to the children <01121> of her

people <05971>.

18  And the men <0582> of the city <05892> said <0559> unto him

on the seventh <07637> day <03117> before <02962> the sun

<02775> went <0935> down, What <04100> [is] sweeter <04966> than

honey <01706>? and what <04100> [is] stronger <05794> than a

lion <0738>? And he said <0559> unto them, If <03883> ye had not

plowed <02790> with my heifer <05697>, ye had not found <04672>

out my riddle <02420>.

19  And the Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came <06743>

upon him, and he went <03381> down <03381> to Ashkelon <0831>,

and slew <05221> thirty <07970> men <0376> of them, and took

<03947> their spoil <02488>, and gave <05414> change <02487> of

garments unto them which expounded <05046> the riddle <02420>.

And his anger <0639> was kindled <02734>, and he went <05927> up

to his father's <01> house <01004>.

20  But Samson's <08123> wife <0802> was [given] to his

companion <04828>, whom <0834> he had used as his friend <07462>.

Judges  15

 1. But it came <01961> to pass within a while after, in the

time <03117> of wheat <02406> harvest <07105>, that Samson

<08123> visited <06485> his wife <0802> with a kid; and he said

<0559>, I will go <0935> in to my wife <0802> into the chamber

<02315>. But her father <01> would not suffer <05414> him to go

<0935> in.

 2  And her father <01> said <0559>, I verily <0559> thought

<0559> that thou hadst utterly hated <08130> her; therefore I

gave <05414> her to thy companion <04828>: [is] not her younger

<06996> sister <0269> fairer <02896> than she? take <01961> her,

I pray <04994> thee, instead <08478> of her.

3  And Samson <08123> said <0559> concerning them, Now <06471>

shall I be more blameless <05352> than the Philistines <06430>,

though <03588> I do <06213> them a displeasure <07451>.

4  And Samson <08123> went <03212> and caught <03920> three

<07969> hundred <03967> foxes <07776>, and took <03947>

firebrands <03940>, and turned <06437> tail <02180> to tail

<02180>, and put <07760> a firebrand <03940> in the midst

<08432> between <0996> two <08147> tails <02180>.

5  And when he had set the brands <03940> on fire <0784>, he

let [them] go <07971> into the standing <07054> corn <07054> of

the Philistines <06430>, and burnt <01197> up both the shocks

<01430>, and also <05704> the standing <07054> corn <07054>,

with the vineyards <03754> [and] olives <02132>.

6  Then the Philistines <06430> said <0559>, Who <04310> hath

done <06213> this <02063>? And they answered <0559>, Samson

<08123>, the son <02860> in law <02859> of the Timnite <08554>,

because <03588> he had taken <03947> his wife <0802>, and given

<05414> her to his companion <04828>. And the Philistines

<06430> came <05927> up, and burnt <08313> her and her father

<01> with fire <0784>.

7  And Samson <08123> said <0559> unto them, Though <0518> ye

have done <06213> this <02063>, yet will I be avenged <05358> of

you, and after <0310> that I will cease <02308>.

8  And he smote <05221> them hip <07785> and thigh <03409> with

a great <01419> slaughter <04347>: and he went <03381> down

<03381> and dwelt <03427> in the top <05585> of the rock <05553>

Etam <05862>.

 9. Then the Philistines <06430> went <05927> up, and pitched

<02583> in Judah <03063>, and spread <05203> themselves in Lehi

<03896>.

10  And the men <0376> of Judah <03063> said <0559>, Why

<04100> are ye come <05927> up against <05921> us? And they

answered <0559>, To bind <0631> Samson <08123> are we come

<05927> up, to do <06213> to him as he hath done <06213> to us.

11  Then three <07969> thousand <0505> men <0376> of Judah

<03063> went <03381> to the top <05585> of the rock <05553> Etam

<05862>, and said <0559> to Samson <08123>, Knowest <03045> thou

not that the Philistines <06430> [are] rulers <04910> over us?

what <04100> [is] this <02063> [that] thou hast done <06213>

unto us? And he said <0559> unto them, As they did <06213> unto

me, so <03651> have I done <06213> unto them.

12  And they said <0559> unto him, We are come <03381> down

<03381> to bind <0631> thee, that we may deliver <05414> thee

into the hand <03027> of the Philistines <06430>. And Samson

<08123> said <0559> unto them, Swear <07650> unto me, that ye

will not fall <06293> upon me yourselves <0859>.

 13  And they spake <0559> unto him, saying <0559>, No <03808>;

but we will bind <0631> thee fast, and deliver <05414> thee into

their hand <03027>: but surely we will not kill <04191> thee.

And they bound <0631> him with two <08147> new <02319> cords

<05688>, and brought <05927> him up from the rock <05553>.

14  [And] when he came <0935> unto Lehi <03896>, the

Philistines <06430> shouted <07321> against <07125> him: and the

Spirit <07307> of the LORD <03068> came mightily upon him, and

the cords <05688> that [were] upon his arms <02220> became

<01961> as flax <06593> that was burnt <01197> with fire <0784>,

and his bands <0612> loosed <04549> from off <05921> his hands

<03027>.

 15  And he found <04672> a new <02961> jawbone <03895> of an

ass <02543>, and put <07971> forth <07971> his hand <03027>, and

took <03947> it, and slew <05221> a thousand <0505> men <0376>

therewith.

16  And Samson <08123> said <0559>, With the jawbone <03895> of

an ass <02543>, heaps <02565> upon heaps <02565>, with the jaw

<03895> of an ass <02543> have I slain <05221> a thousand <0505>

men <0376>.

17  And it came <01961> to pass, when he had made an end

<03615> of speaking <01696>, that he cast <07993> away the

jawbone <03895> out of his hand <03027>, and called <07121> that

place <04725> Ramathlehi <07437>.

 18. And he was sore <03966> athirst <06770>, and called <07121>

on <0413> the LORD <03068>, and said <0559>, Thou hast given

<05414> this <02063> great <01419> deliverance <08668> into the

hand <03027> of thy servant <05650>: and now <06258> shall I die

<04191> for thirst <06772>, and fall <05307> into the hand

<03027> of the uncircumcised <06189>?

19  But God <0430> clave <01234> an hollow <04388> place that

[was] in the jaw <03895>, and there came <03318> water <04325>

thereout; and when he had drunk <08354>, his spirit <07307> came

<07725> again <07725>, and he revived <02421>: wherefore <04100>

he called <07121> the name <08034> thereof Enhakkore <05875>,

which <0834> [is] in Lehi <03896> unto this <02063> day <03117>.

20  And he judged <08199> Israel <03478> in the days <03117> of

the Philistines <06430> twenty <06242> years <08141>.

Judges  16

 1. Then went <03212> Samson <08123> to Gaza <05804>, and saw

<07200> there <08033> an harlot <02181>, and went <0935> in unto

her.

2  [And it was told] the Gazites <05841>, saying <0559>, Samson

<08123> is come <0935> hither. And they compassed <05437> [him]

in, and laid wait <0693> for him all <03605> night <03915> in

the gate <08179> of the city <05892>, and were quiet <02790> all

<03605> the night <03915>, saying <0559>, In the morning <01242>,

when <05704> it is day <01242>, we shall kill <02026> him.

3  And Samson <08123> lay <07901> till <05704> midnight, and

arose <06965> at midnight, and took <0270> the doors <01817> of

the gate <08179> of the city <05892>, and the two <08147> posts

<04201>, and went <05265> away <05265> with them, bar <01280>

and all <05973>, and put <07760> [them] upon his shoulders

<03802>, and carried <05927> them up to the top <07218> of an

hill <02022> that [is] before Hebron <02275>.

 4. And it came <01961> to pass afterward, that he loved <0157>

a woman <0802> in the valley <05158> of Sorek <07796>, whose

name <08034> [was] Delilah <01807>.

5  And the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430> came

<05927> up unto her, and said <0559> unto her, Entice <06601>

him, and see <07200> wherein <04100> his great <01419> strength

<03581> [lieth], and by what <04100> [means] we may prevail

<03201> against him, that we may bind <0631> him to afflict

<06031> him: and we will give <05414> thee every <0376> one

<0376> of us eleven hundred <03967> [pieces] of silver <03701>.

6  And Delilah <01807> said <0559> to Samson <08123>, Tell

<05046> me, I pray <04994> thee, wherein <04100> thy great

<01419> strength <03581> [lieth], and wherewith <04100> thou

mightest be bound <0631> to afflict <06031> thee.

7  And Samson <08123> said <0559> unto her, If <0518> they bind

<0631> me with seven <07651> green <03892> withs <03499> that

were never <03808> dried <02717>, then shall I be weak <02470>,

and be as another <0259> man <0120>.

8  Then the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430> brought

<05927> up to her seven <07651> green <03892> withs <03499>

which <0834> had not been dried <02717>, and she bound <0631>

him with them.

9  Now [there were] men lying in wait <0693>, abiding <03427>

with her in the chamber <02315>. And she said <0559> unto him,

The Philistines <06430> [be] upon thee, Samson <08123>. And he

brake <05423> the withs <03499>, as a thread <06616> of tow

<05296> is broken <05423> when it toucheth <07306> the fire

<0784>. So his strength <03581> was not known <03045>.

10  And Delilah <01807> said <0559> unto Samson <08123>, Behold

<02009>, thou hast mocked <02048> me, and told <01696> me lies

<03576>: now <06258> tell <05046> me, I pray <04994> thee,

wherewith <04100> thou mightest be bound <0631>.

11  And he said <0559> unto her, If <0518> they bind <0631> me

fast with new <02319> ropes <05688> that never <03808> were

occupied, then shall I be weak <02470>, and be as another <0259>

man <0120>.

 12  Delilah <01807> therefore took <03947> new <02319> ropes

<05688>, and bound <0631> him therewith, and said <0559> unto

him, The Philistines <06430> [be] upon thee, Samson <08123>. And

[there were] liers in wait <0693> abiding <03427> in the chamber

<02315>. And he brake <05423> them from off <05921> his arms

<02220> like a thread <02339>.

 13  And Delilah <01807> said <0559> unto Samson <08123>,

Hitherto thou hast mocked <02048> me, and told <01696> me lies

<03576>: tell <05046> me wherewith <0834> thou mightest be bound

<0631>. And he said <0559> unto her, If <0518> thou weavest

<0707> the seven <07651> locks <04253> of my head <07218> with

the web <04545>.

14  And she fastened <08628> [it] with the pin <03489>, and

said <0559> unto him, The Philistines <06430> [be] upon thee,

Samson <08123>. And he awaked <03364> out of his sleep <08142>,

and went <05265> away <05265> with the pin <03489> of the beam

<0708>, and with the web <04545>.

15  And she said <0559> unto him, How <0349> canst thou say

<0559>, I love <0157> thee, when thine heart <03820> [is] not

with me? thou hast mocked <02048> me these <02088> three <07969>

times <06471>, and hast not told <05046> me wherein <04100> thy

great <01419> strength <03581> [lieth].

16  And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> she pressed

<06693> him daily <03117> with her words <01697>, and urged

<0509> him, [so] that his soul <05315> was vexed <07114> unto

death <04191>;

17  That he told <05046> her all <03605> his heart <03820>, and

said <0559> unto her, There hath not come <05927> a razor

<04177> upon mine head <07218>; for I [have been] a Nazarite

<05139> unto God <0430> from my mother's <0517> womb <0990>: if

<0518> I be shaven <01548>, then my strength <03581> will go

<05493> from me, and I shall become <02470> weak <02470>, and be

like any <03605> [other] man <0120>.

 18. And when Delilah <01807> saw <07200> that he had told

<05046> her all <03605> his heart <03820>, she sent <07971> and

called <07121> for the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430>,

saying <0559>, Come <05927> up this once <06471>, for he hath

shewed <05046> me all <03605> his heart <03820>. Then the lords

<05633> of the Philistines <06430> came <05927> up unto her, and

brought <05927> money <03701> in their hand <03027>.

19  And she made him sleep <03462> upon her knees <01290>; and

she called <07121> for a man <0376>, and she caused him to shave

<01548> off the seven <07651> locks <04253> of his head <07218>;

and she began <02490> to afflict <06031> him, and his strength

<03581> went <05493> from him.

20  And she said <0559>, The Philistines <06430> [be] upon thee,

Samson <08123>. And he awoke <03364> out of his sleep <08142>,

and said <0559>, I will go <03318> out as at other times <06471>

before <06471>, and shake <05287> myself. And he wist <03045>

not that the LORD <03068> was departed <05493> from him.

21  But the Philistines <06430> took <0270> him, and put

<05365> out his eyes <05869>, and brought <03381> him down

<03381> to Gaza <05804>, and bound <0631> him with fetters

<05178> of brass <05178>; and he did grind <02912> in the prison

<0631> house <01004>.

 22. Howbeit the hair <08181> of his head <07218> began <02490>

to grow <06779> again after <0834> he was shaven <01548>.

23  Then the lords <05633> of the Philistines <06430> gathered

<06908> them together for to offer <02076> a great <01419>

sacrifice <02077> unto Dagon <01712> their god <0430>, and to

rejoice <08057>: for they said <0559>, Our god <0430> hath

delivered <05414> Samson <08123> our enemy <0341> into our hand

<03027>.

24  And when the people <05971> saw <07200> him, they praised

<01984> their god <0430>: for they said <0559>, Our god <0430>

hath delivered <05414> into our hands <03027> our enemy <0341>,

and the destroyer <02717> of our country <0776>, which <0834>

slew <02491> many <07235> of us.

25  And it came <01961> to pass, when <03588> their hearts

<03820> were merry <02896>, that they said <0559>, Call <07121>

for Samson <08123>, that he may make us sport <07832>. And they

called <07121> for Samson <08123> out of the prison <0631> house

<01004>; and he made them sport <06711>: and they set <05975>

him between <0996> the pillars <05982>.

26  And Samson <08123> said <0559> unto the lad <05288> that

held <02388> him by the hand <03027>, Suffer <03240> me that I

may feel <04184> the pillars <05982> whereupon the house <01004>

standeth <03559>, that I may lean <08172> upon them.

27  Now the house <01004> was full <04390> of men <0582> and

women <0802>; and all <03605> the lords <05633> of the

Philistines <06430> [were] there <08033>; and [there were] upon

the roof <01406> about three <07969> thousand <0505> men <0376>

and women <0802>, that beheld <07200> while Samson <08123> made

sport <07832>.

28  And Samson <08123> called <07121> unto the LORD <03068>,

and said <0559>, O Lord <0136> GOD <03069>, remember <02142> me,

I pray <04994> thee, and strengthen <02388> me, I pray <04994>

thee, only <0389> this <02088> once <06471>, O God <0430>, that

I may be at once avenged <05358> of the Philistines <06430> for

my two <08147> eyes <05869>.

29  And Samson <08123> took hold <03943> of the two <08147>

middle <08432> pillars <05982> upon which <0834> the house

<01004> stood <03559>, and on <05921> which it was borne <05564>

up, of the one <0259> with his right <03225> hand, and of the

other <0259> with his left <08040>.

30  And Samson <08123> said <0559>, Let me die <04191> with the

Philistines <06430>. And he bowed <05186> himself with [all his]

might <03581>; and the house <01004> fell <05307> upon the lords

<05633>, and upon all <03605> the people <05971> that [were]

therein. So the dead <04191> which <0834> he slew <04191> at his

death <04194> were more <07227> than [they] which <0834> he slew

<04191> in his life <02416>.

31  Then his brethren <0251> and all <03605> the house <01004>

of his father <01> came <03381> down <03381>, and took <05375>

him, and brought <05927> [him] up, and buried <06912> him

between <0996> Zorah <06681> and Eshtaol <0847> in the

buryingplace <06913> of Manoah <04495> his father <01>. And he

judged <08199> Israel <03478> twenty <06242> years <08141>.

Judges  17

 1. And there was a man <0376> of mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>,

whose name <08034> [was] Micah <04319>.

2  And he said <0559> unto his mother <0517>, The eleven

hundred <03967> [shekels] of silver <03701> that were taken

<03947> from thee, about which thou cursedst <0422>, and spakest

<0559> of also <01571> in mine ears <0241>, behold <02009>, the

silver <03701> [is] with me; I took <03947> it. And his mother

<0517> said <0559>, Blessed <01288> [be thou] of the LORD

<03068>, my son <01121>.

3  And when he had restored <07725> the eleven hundred <03967>

[shekels] of silver <03701> to his mother <0517>, his mother

<0517> said <0559>, I had wholly <06942> dedicated <06942> the

silver <03701> unto the LORD <03068> from my hand <03027> for my

son <01121>, to make <06213> a graven <06459> image and a molten

<04541> image: now <06258> therefore I will restore <07725> it

unto thee.

4  Yet he restored <07725> the money <03701> unto his mother

<0517>; and his mother <0517> took <03947> two hundred <03967>

[shekels] of silver <03701>, and gave <05414> them to the

founder <06884>, who made <06213> thereof a graven <06459> image

and a molten <04541> image: and they were in the house <01004>

of Micah <04319>.

5  And the man <0376> Micah <04318> had an house <01004> of

gods <0430>, and made <06213> an ephod <0646>, and teraphim

<08655>, and consecrated one <0259> of his sons <01121>, who

became <01961> his priest <03548>.

6  In those <01992> days <03117> [there was] no <0369> king

<04428> in Israel <03478>, [but] every man <0376> did <06213>

[that which was] right <03477> in his own eyes <05869>.

 7. And there was a young <05288> man out of Bethlehemjudah

<01035> of the family <04940> of Judah <03063>, who <01931>

[was] a Levite <03881>, and he sojourned <01481> there <08033>.

8  And the man <0376> departed <03212> out of the city <05892>

from Bethlehemjudah <01035> to sojourn <01481> where <0834> he

could find <04672> [a place]: and he came <0935> to mount

<02022> Ephraim <0669> to the house <01004> of Micah <04318>, as

he journeyed.

9  And Micah <04319> said <0559> unto him, Whence <0370> comest

<0935> thou? And he said <0559> unto him, I [am] a Levite

<03881> of Bethlehemjudah <01035>, and I go <01980> to sojourn

<01481> where <0834> I may find <04672> [a place].

10  And Micah <04319> said <0559> unto him, Dwell <03427> with

me, and be unto me a father <01> and a priest <03548>, and I

will give <05414> thee ten <06235> [shekels] of silver <03701>

by the year <03117>, and a suit <06187> of apparel <0899>, and

thy victuals <04241>. So the Levite <03881> went <03212> in.

11  And the Levite <03881> was content <02974> to dwell <03427>

with the man <0376>; and the young <05288> man was unto him as

one <0259> of his sons <01121>.

12  And Micah <04318> consecrated the Levite <03881>; and the

young <05288> man became <01961> his priest <03548>, and was in

the house <01004> of Micah <04318>.

 13  Then said <0559> Micah <04318>, Now <06258> know <03045> I

that the LORD <03068> will do me good <03190>, seeing <03588> I

have <01961> a Levite <03881> to [my] priest <03548>.

Judges  18

 1. In those <01992> days <03117> [there was] no <0369> king

<04428> in Israel <03478>: and in those <01992> days <03117> the

tribe <07626> of the Danites <01839> sought <01245> them an

inheritance <05159> to dwell <03427> in; for unto that day

<03117> [all their] inheritance <05159> had not fallen <05307>

unto them among <08432> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>.

2  And the children <01121> of Dan <01835> sent <07971> of

their family <04940> five <02568> men from their coasts <07098>,

men of valour <02428>, from Zorah <06681>, and from Eshtaol

<0847>, to spy <07270> out the land <0776>, and to search

<02713> it; and they said <0559> unto them, Go <03212>, search

<02713> the land <0776>: who when they came <0935> to mount

<02022> Ephraim <0669>, to the house <01004> of Micah <04318>,

they lodged <03885> there <08033>.

3  When they [were] by the house <01004> of Micah <04318>, they

knew <05234> the voice <06963> of the young <05288> man the

Levite <03881>: and they turned <05493> in thither <08033>, and

said <0559> unto him, Who <04310> brought <0935> thee hither

<01988>? and what <04100> makest <06213> thou in this <06311>

[place]? and what <04100> hast thou here <06311>?

4  And he said <0559> unto them, Thus <02090> and thus <02088>

dealeth <06213> Micah <04318> with me, and hath hired <07936> me,

and I am his priest <03548>.

5  And they said <0559> unto him, Ask <07592> counsel, we pray

<04994> thee, of God <0430>, that we may know <03045> whether

our way <01870> which <0834> we go <01980> shall be prosperous

<06743>.

6  And the priest <03548> said <0559> unto them, Go <03212> in

peace <07965>: before <05227> the LORD <03068> [is] your way

<01870> wherein <0834> ye go <03212>.

 7. Then the five <02568> men <0582> departed <03212>, and came

<0935> to Laish <03919>, and saw <07200> the people <05971> that

[were] therein <07130>, how they dwelt <03427> careless <0983>,

after the manner <04941> of the Zidonians <06722>, quiet <08252>

and secure <0982>; and [there was] no <0369> magistrate in the

land <0776>, that might put <03637> [them] to shame <03637> in

[any] thing <01697>; and they [were] far <07350> from the

Zidonians <06722>, and had no <0369> business <01697> with [any]

man <0120>.

8  And they came <0935> unto their brethren <0251> to Zorah

<06681> and Eshtaol <0847>: and their brethren <0251> said

<0559> unto them, What <04100> [say <0559>] ye?

9  And they said <0559>, Arise <06965>, that we may go <05927>

up against <05921> them: for we have seen <07200> the land

<0776>, and, behold <02009>, it [is] very <03966> good <02896>:

and [are] ye still <02814>? be not slothful <06101> to go

<03212>, [and] to enter <0935> to possess <03423> the land

<0776>.

10  When ye go <0935>, ye shall come <0935> unto a people

<05971> secure <0982>, and to a large land <0776>: for God

<0430> hath given <05414> it into your hands <03027>; a place

<04725> where <0834> [there is] no <0369> want <04270> of any

<03605> thing <01697> that [is] in the earth <0776>.

11  And there went <05265> from thence <08033> of the family

<04940> of the Danites <01839>, out of Zorah <06681> and out of

Eshtaol <0847>, six <08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> appointed

<02296> with weapons <03627> of war <04421>.

12  And they went <05927> up, and pitched <02583> in

Kirjathjearim <07157>, in Judah <03063>: wherefore they called

<07121> that place <04725> Mahanehdan <04265> unto this <02088>

day <03117>: behold <02009>, [it is] behind <0310> Kirjathjearim

<07157>.

13  And they passed <05674> thence <08033> unto mount <02022>

Ephraim <0669>, and came <0935> unto the house <01004> of Micah

<04318>.

 14. Then answered <06030> the five <02568> men <0582> that went

<01980> to spy <07270> out the country <0776> of Laish <03919>,

and said <0559> unto their brethren <0251>, Do ye know <03045>

that there is in these <0428> houses <01004> an ephod <0646>,

and teraphim <08655>, and a graven <06459> image, and a molten

<04541> image? now <06258> therefore consider <03045> what

<04100> ye have to do <06213>.

15  And they turned <05493> thitherward <08033>, and came

<0935> to the house <01004> of the young <05288> man the Levite

<03881>, [even] unto the house <01004> of Micah <04318>, and

saluted him.

16  And the six <08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> appointed

<02296> with their weapons <03627> of war <04421>, which <0834>

[were] of the children <01121> of Dan <01835>, stood <05324> by

the entering <06607> of the gate <08179>.

17  And the five <02568> men <0582> that went <05927> to spy

<07270> out the land <0776> went <05927> up, [and] came <0935>

in thither <08033>, [and] took <03947> the graven <06459> image,

and the ephod <0646>, and the teraphim <08655>, and the molten

<04541> image: and the priest <03548> stood <05324> in the

entering <06607> of the gate <08179> with the six <08337>

hundred <03967> men <0376> [that were] appointed <02296> with

weapons <03627> of war <04421>.

 18  And these <0428> went <0935> into Micah's <04318> house

<01004>, and fetched <03947> the carved <06459> image, the ephod

<0646>, and the teraphim <08655>, and the molten <04541> image.

Then said <0559> the priest <03548> unto them, What <04100> do

<06213> ye?

19  And they said <0559> unto him, Hold <02790> thy peace

<02790>, lay <07760> thine hand <03027> upon thy mouth <06310>,

and go <03212> with us, and be to us a father <01> and a priest

<03548>: [is it] better <02896> for thee to be a priest <03548>

unto the house <01004> of one <0259> man <0376>, or <0176> that

thou be a priest <03548> unto a tribe <07626> and a family

<04940> in Israel <03478>?

 20  And the priest's <03548> heart <03820> was glad <08190>,

and he took <03947> the ephod <0646>, and the teraphim <08655>,

and the graven <06459> image, and went <0935> in the midst

<07130> of the people <05971>.

21  So they turned <06437> and departed <03212>, and put

<07760> the little <02945> ones and the cattle <04735> and the

carriage <03520> before <06440> them.

22  [And] when they were a good <07368> way from the house

<01004> of Micah <04318>, the men <0582> that [were] in the

houses <01004> near <05973> to Micah's <04318> house <01004>

were gathered <02199> together, and overtook <01692> the

children <01121> of Dan <01835>.

23  And they cried <07121> unto the children <01121> of Dan

<01835>. And they turned <05437> their faces <06440>, and said

<0559> unto Micah <04318>, What <04100> aileth thee, that thou

comest <02199> with such a company <02199>?

24  And he said <0559>, Ye have taken <03947> away my gods

<0430> which <0834> I made <06213>, and the priest <03548>, and

ye are gone <03212> away: and what <04100> have I more <05750>?

and what <04100> [is] this <02088> [that] ye say <0559> unto me,

What <04100> aileth thee?

25  And the children <01121> of Dan <01835> said <0559> unto

him, Let not thy voice <06963> be heard <08085> among us, lest

<06435> angry <05315> fellows <0582> run <06293> upon thee, and

thou lose <0622> thy life <05315>, with the lives <05315> of thy

household <01004>.

26  And the children <01121> of Dan <01835> went <03212> their

way <01870>: and when Micah <04318> saw <07200> that they [were]

too strong <02389> for him, he turned <06437> and went <07725>

back <07725> unto his house <01004>.

 27. And they took <03947> [the things] which <0834> Micah

<04318> had made <06213>, and the priest <03548> which <0834> he

had <01961>, and came <0935> unto Laish <03919>, unto a people

<05971> [that were] at quiet <08252> and secure <0982>: and they

smote <05221> them with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>,

and burnt <08313> the city <05892> with fire <0784>.

28  And [there was] no <0369> deliverer <05337>, because

<03588> it [was] far <07350> from Zidon <06721>, and they had no

<0369> business <01697> with [any] man <0120>; and it was in the

valley <06010> that [lieth] by Bethrehob <01050>. And they built

<01129> a city <05892>, and dwelt <03427> therein.

29  And they called <07121> the name <08034> of the city

<05892> Dan <01835>, after the name <08034> of Dan <01835> their

father <01>, who <0834> was born <03205> unto Israel <03478>:

howbeit <0199> the name <08034> of the city <05892> [was] Laish

<03919> at the first <07223>.

30  And the children <01121> of Dan <01835> set <06965> up the

graven <06459> image: and Jonathan <03129>, the son <01121> of

Gershom <01648>, the son <01121> of Manasseh <04519>, he and his

sons <01121> were priests <03548> to the tribe <07626> of Dan

<01835> until <05704> the day <03117> of the captivity <01546>

of the land <0776>.

 31  And they set <07760> them up Micah's <04318> graven <06459>

image, which <0834> he made <06213>, all <03605> the time that

the house <01004> of God <0430> was in Shiloh <07887>.

Judges  19

 1. And it came <01961> to pass in those <01992> days <03117>,

when [there was] no <0369> king <04428> in Israel <03478>, that

there was a certain <0376> Levite <03881> sojourning <01481> on

the side <03411> of mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>, who took

<03947> to him a concubine <06370> out of Bethlehemjudah <01035>.

2  And his concubine <06370> played the whore <02181> against

<05921> him, and went <03212> away from him unto her father's

<01> house <01004> to Bethlehemjudah <01035>, and was there

<08033> four <0702> whole <03117> months <02320>.

3  And her husband <0376> arose <06965>, and went <03212> after

<0310> her, to speak <01696> friendly <03820> unto her, [and] to

bring <07725> her again <07725>, having his servant <05288> with

him, and a couple <06776> of asses <02543>: and she brought

<0935> him into her father's <01> house <01004>: and when the

father <01> of the damsel <05291> saw <07200> him, he rejoiced

<08055> to meet <07125> him.

 4  And his father <02859> in law <02859>, the damsel's <05291>

father <01>, retained <02388> him; and he abode <03427> with him

three <07969> days <03117>: so they did eat <0398> and drink

<08354>, and lodged <03885> there <08033>.

5  And it came <01961> to pass on the fourth <07243> day

<03117>, when they arose <07925> early <07925> in the morning

<01242>, that he rose <06965> up to depart <03212>: and the

damsel's <05291> father <01> said <0559> unto his son <02860> in

law <02859>, Comfort <05582> thine heart <03820> with a morsel

<06595> of bread <03899>, and afterward <0310> go <03212> your

way.

6  And they sat <03427> down, and did eat <0398> and drink

<08354> both <08147> of them together <03162>: for the damsel's

<05291> father <01> had said <0559> unto the man <0376>, Be

content <02974>, I pray <04994> thee, and tarry <03885> all

<03885> night, and let thine heart <03820> be merry <03190>.

7  And when the man <0376> rose <06965> up to depart <03212>,

his father <02859> in law <02859> urged <06484> him: therefore

he lodged <03885> there <08033> again <07725>.

8  And he arose <07925> early <07925> in the morning <01242> on

the fifth <02549> day <03117> to depart <03212>: and the

damsel's <05291> father <01> said <0559>, Comfort <05582> thine

heart <03824>, I pray <04994> thee. And they tarried <04102>

until <05704> afternoon, and they did eat <0398> both <08147> of

them.

9  And when the man <0376> rose <06965> up to depart <03212>,

he, and his concubine <06370>, and his servant <05288>, his

father <02859> in law <02859>, the damsel's <05291> father <01>,

said <0559> unto him, Behold <02009>, now <04994> the day

<03117> draweth <07503> toward evening <06150>, I pray <04994>

you tarry <03885> all <03885> night: behold <02009>, the day

<03117> groweth <02583> to an end <02583>, lodge <03885> here

<06311>, that thine heart <03824> may be merry <03190>; and to

morrow <04279> get you early <07925> on your way <01870>, that

thou mayest go <01980> home <0168>.

10  But the man <0376> would <014> not tarry <03885> that night,

but he rose <06965> up and departed <03212>, and came <0935>

over <05227> against <05227> Jebus <02982>, which <01958> [is]

Jerusalem <03389>; and [there were] with him two <06771> asses

<02543> saddled <02280>, his concubine <06370> also [was] with

him.

11  [And] when they [were] by Jebus <02982>, the day <03117>

was far <03966> spent <07286>; and the servant <05288> said

<0559> unto his master <0113>, Come <03212>, I pray <04994> thee,

and let us turn <05493> in into <0413> this <02063> city

<05892> of the Jebusites <02983>, and lodge <03885> in it.

12  And his master <0113> said <0559> unto him, We will not

turn <05493> aside hither into <0413> the city <05892> of a

stranger <05237>, that [is] not of the children <01121> of

Israel <03478>; we will pass <05674> over <05674> to Gibeah

<01390>.

13  And he said <0559> unto his servant <05288>, Come <03212>,

and let us draw near <07126> to one <0259> of these places

<04725> to lodge <03885> all <03885> night, in Gibeah <01390>,

or <0176> in Ramah <07414>.

14  And they passed <05674> on and went <03212> their way

<03212>; and the sun <08121> went <0935> down upon them [when

they were] by Gibeah <01390>, which <0834> [belongeth] to

Benjamin <01144>.

15  And they turned <05493> aside thither <08033>, to go <0935>

in [and] to lodge <03885> in Gibeah <01390>: and when he went

<0935> in, he sat <03427> him down in a street <07339> of the

city <05892>: for [there was] no <0369> man <0376> that took

<0622> them into his house <01004> to lodging <03885>.

 16. And, behold <02009>, there came <0935> an old <02205> man

<0376> from his work <04639> out of the field <07704> at even

<06153>, which [was] also of mount <02022> Ephraim <0669>; and

he sojourned <01481> in Gibeah <01390>: but the men <0582> of

the place <04725> [were] Benjamites <01145>.

17  And when he had lifted <05375> up his eyes <05869>, he saw

<07200> a wayfaring <0732> man <0376> in the street <07339> of

the city <05892>: and the old <02205> man <0376> said <0559>,

Whither <0575> goest <03212> thou? and whence <0370> comest

<0935> thou?

18  And he said <0559> unto him, We [are] passing <05674> from

Bethlehemjudah <01035> toward <05704> the side <03411> of mount

<02022> Ephraim <0669>; from thence <08033> [am] I: and I went

<03212> to Bethlehemjudah <01035>, but I [am now] going <01980>

to the house <01004> of the LORD <03068>; and there [is] no

<0369> man <0376> that receiveth <0622> me to house <01004>.

19  Yet <01571> there is both <01571> straw <08401> and

provender <04554> for our asses <02543>; and there is bread

<03899> and wine <03196> also <01571> for me, and for thy

handmaid <0519>, and for the young <05288> man [which is] with

thy servants <05650>: [there is] no <0369> want <04270> of any

<03605> thing <01697>.

 20  And the old <02205> man <0376> said <0559>, Peace <07965>

[be] with thee; howsoever <07535> [let] all <03605> thy wants

<04270> [lie] upon me; only <07535> lodge <03885> not in the

street <07339>.

21  So he brought <0935> him into his house <01004>, and gave

provender <01101> unto the asses <02543>: and they washed

<07364> their feet <07272>, and did eat <0398> and drink <08354>.

 22. [Now] as they were making their hearts <03820> merry

<03190>, behold <02009>, the men <0582> of the city <05892>,

certain <0582> sons <01121> of Belial <01100>, beset <05437> the

house <01004> round <05437> about, [and] beat <01849> at <05921>

the door <01817>, and spake <0559> to the master <01167> of the

house <01004>, the old <02205> man <0376>, saying <0559>, Bring

<03318> forth <03318> the man <0376> that came <0935> into

<0413> thine house <01004>, that we may know <03045> him.

23  And the man <0376>, the master <01167> of the house <01004>,

went <03318> out unto them, and said <0559> unto them, Nay

<0408>, my brethren <0251>, [nay], I pray <04994> you, do not

[so] wickedly <07489>; seeing <0310> that this <02088> man

<0376> is come <0935> into <0413> mine house <01004>, do <06213>

not this <02063> folly <05039>.

24  Behold <02009>, [here is] my daughter <01323> a maiden

<01330>, and his concubine <06370>; them I will bring <03318>

out now <04994>, and humble <06031> ye them, and do <06213> with

them what seemeth <05869> good <02896> unto you: but unto this

<02088> man <0376> do <06213> not so <02063> vile <05039> a

thing <01697>.

25  But the men <0582> would <014> not hearken <08085> to him:

so the man <0376> took <02388> his concubine <06370>, and

brought <03318> her forth <03318> unto them; and they knew

<03045> her, and abused <05953> her all <03605> the night

<03915> until <05704> the morning <01242>: and when the day

<07837> began <05927> to spring <05927>, they let her go <07971>.

26  Then came <0935> the woman <0802> in the dawning <06437> of

the day <01242>, and fell <05307> down at the door <06607> of

the man's <0376> house <01004> where her lord <0113> [was], till

<05704> it was light <0216>.

27  And her lord <0113> rose <06965> up in the morning <01242>,

and opened <06605> the doors <01817> of the house <01004>, and

went <03318> out to go <03212> his way <01870>: and, behold

<02009>, the woman <0802> his concubine <06370> was fallen

<05307> down [at] the door <06607> of the house <01004>, and her

hands <03027> [were] upon the threshold <05592>.

28  And he said <0559> unto her, Up, and let us be going

<03212>. But none <0369> answered <06030>. Then the man <0376>

took <03947> her [up] upon an ass <02543>, and the man <0376>

rose <06965> up, and gat <03212> him unto his place <04725>.

29  And when he was come <0935> into <0413> his house <01004>,

he took <03947> a knife <03979>, and laid hold <02388> on his

concubine <06370>, and divided <05408> her, [together] with her

bones <06106>, into twelve pieces <05409>, and sent <07971> her

into all <03605> the coasts <01366> of Israel <03478>.

30  And it was so, that all <03605> that saw <07200> it said

<0559>, There was no <03808> such <02063> deed done <01961> nor

<03908> seen <07200> from the day <03117> that the children

<01121> of Israel <03478> came <05927> up out of the land <0776>

of Egypt <04714> unto this <02088> day <03117>: consider <07760>

of it, take advice <05779>, and speak <01696> [your minds].

Judges  20

 1. Then all <03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478> went

<03318> out, and the congregation <05712> was gathered <06950>

together as one <0259> man <0376>, from Dan <01835> even to

Beersheba <0884>, with the land <0776> of Gilead <01568>, unto

the LORD <03068> in Mizpeh <04709>.

2  And the chief <06438> of all <03605> the people <05971>,

[even] of all <03605> the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>,

presented <03320> themselves in the assembly <06951> of the

people <05971> of God <0430>, four <0702> hundred <03967>

thousand <0505> footmen that drew <08025> sword <02719>.

3  (Now the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> heard <08085>

that the children <01121> of Israel <03478> were gone <05927> up

to Mizpeh <04709>.) Then said <0559> the children <01121> of

Israel <03478>, Tell <01696> [us], how <0349> was this <02063>

wickedness <07451>?

4  And the Levite <03881>, the husband <0376> of the woman

<0802> that was slain <07523>, answered <06030> and said <0559>,

I came <0935> into Gibeah <01390> that [belongeth] to Benjamin

<01144>, I and my concubine <06370>, to lodge <03885>.

5  And the men <01167> of Gibeah <01390> rose <06965> against

<05921> me, and beset <05437> the house <01004> round <05437>

about upon me by night <03915>, [and] thought <01819> to have

slain <02026> me: and my concubine <06370> have they forced

<06031>, that she is dead <04191>.

 6  And I took <0270> my concubine <06370>, and cut <05408> her

in pieces, and sent <07971> her throughout all <03605> the

country <07704> of the inheritance <05159> of Israel <03478>:

for they have committed <06213> lewdness <02154> and folly

<05039> in Israel <03478>.

7  Behold <02009>, ye [are] all <03605> children <01121> of

Israel <03478>; give <03051> here <01988> your advice <01697>

and counsel <06098>.

8  And all <03605> the people <05971> arose <06965> as one

<0259> man <0376>, saying <0559>, We will not any <0376> [of us]

go <03212> to his tent <0168>, neither <03808> will we any

<0376> [of us] turn <05493> into his house <01004>.

9  But now <06258> this <02063> [shall be] the thing <01697>

which <0834> we will do <06213> to Gibeah <01390>; [we will go

<03212> up] by lot <01486> against <05921> it;

10  And we will take <03947> ten <06235> men <0582> of an

hundred <03967> throughout all <03605> the tribes <07626> of

Israel <03478>, and an hundred <03967> of a thousand <0505>, and

a thousand <07233> out of ten <07233> thousand <07233>, to fetch

<03947> victual <06720> for the people <05971>, that they may do

<06213>, when they come <0935> to Gibeah <01390> of Benjamin

<01144>, according to all <03605> the folly <05039> that they

have wrought <06213> in Israel <03478>.

11  So all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel <03478> were

gathered <0622> against <0413> the city <05892>, knit <02270>

together as one <0259> man <0376>.

 12. And the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478> sent <07971> men

<0582> through all <03605> the tribe <07626> of Benjamin <01144>,

saying <0559>, What <04100> wickedness <07451> [is] this

<02063> that is done <01961> among you?

13  Now <06258> therefore deliver <05414> [us] the men <0582>,

the children <01121> of Belial <01100>, which <0834> [are] in

Gibeah <01390>, that we may put them to death <04191>, and put

<01197> away <01197> evil <07451> from Israel <03478>. But the

children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> would <014> not hearken

<08085> to the voice <06963> of their brethren <0251> the

children <01121> of Israel <03478>:

14  But the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> gathered

<0622> themselves together out of the cities <05892> unto Gibeah

<01390>, to go <03318> out to battle <04421> against <05973> the

children <01121> of Israel <03478>.

15  And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> were numbered

<06485> at that time out of the cities <05892> twenty <06242>

and six <08337> thousand <0505> men <0376> that drew <08025>

sword <02719>, beside <0905> the inhabitants <03427> of Gibeah

<01390>, which were numbered <06485> seven <07651> hundred

<03967> chosen <0970> men <0376>.

16  Among all <03605> this <02088> people <05971> [there were]

seven <07651> hundred <03967> chosen <0970> men <0376>

lefthanded; every <03605> one could sling <07049> stones <068>

at <0413> an hair <08185> [breadth], and not miss <02398>.

17  And the men <0376> of Israel <03478>, beside <0905>

Benjamin <01144>, were numbered <06485> four <0702> hundred

<03967> thousand <0505> men <0376> that drew <08025> sword

<02719>: all <03605> these <02088> [were] men <0376> of war

<04421>.

 18. And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> arose <06965>,

and went <05927> up to the house <01008> of God <01008>, and

asked <07592> counsel of God <0430>, and said <0559>, Which

<04310> of us shall go <05927> up first <08462> to the battle

<04421> against <05973> the children <01121> of Benjamin

<01144>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Judah <03063> [shall

go <03212> up] first <08462>.

19  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> rose <06965> up

in the morning <01242>, and encamped <02583> against <05921>

Gibeah <01390>.

20  And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> went <03318> out to

battle <04421> against <05973> Benjamin <01144>; and the men

<0376> of Israel <03478> put themselves in array <06186> to

fight <04421> against them at Gibeah <01390>.

21  And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> came <03318>

forth <03318> out of Gibeah <01390>, and destroyed <07843> down

to the ground <0776> of the Israelites <03478> that day <03117>

twenty <06242> and two <08147> thousand <0505> men <0376>.

22  And the people <05971> the men <0376> of Israel <03478>

encouraged <02388> themselves, and set their battle <04421>

again <03254> in array <06186> in the place <04725> where they

put themselves in array <06186> the first <07223> day <03117>.

23  (And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> went <05927> up

and wept <01058> before <06440> the LORD <03068> until <05704>

even <06153>, and asked <07592> counsel of the LORD <03068>,

saying <0559>, Shall I go <05066> up again <03254> to battle

<04421> against <05973> the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144>

my brother <0251>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Go <05927>

up against <0413> him.)

24  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> came <07126>

near <07126> against <0413> the children <01121> of Benjamin

<01144> the second <08145> day <03117>.

 25  And Benjamin <01144> went <03318> forth <03318> against

<07125> them out of Gibeah <01390> the second <08145> day

<03117>, and destroyed <07843> down to the ground <0776> of the

children <01121> of Israel <03478> again <05750> eighteen

thousand <0505> men <0376>; all <03605> these <0428> drew

<08025> the sword <02719>.

 26. Then all <03605> the children <01121> of Israel <03478>,

and all <03605> the people <05971>, went <05927> up, and came

<0935> unto the house <01008> of God <01008>, and wept <01058>,

and sat <03427> there <08033> before <06440> the LORD <03068>,

and fasted <06684> that day <03117> until <05704> even <06153>,

and offered <05927> burnt <05930> offerings and peace <08002>

offerings before <06440> the LORD <03068>.

27  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> enquired <07592>

of the LORD <03068>, (for the ark <0727> of the covenant <01285>

of God <0430> [was] there <08033> in those <01992> days <03117>,

28  And Phinehas <06372>, the son <01121> of Eleazar <0499>,

the son <01121> of Aaron <0175>, stood <05975> before it in

those <01992> days <03117>,) saying <0559>, Shall I yet <05750>

again <03254> go <03318> out to battle <04421> against <05973>

the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> my brother <0251>, or

shall I cease <02308>? And the LORD <03068> said <0559>, Go

<05927> up; for to morrow <04279> I will deliver <05414> them

into thine hand <03027>.

29  And Israel <03478> set <07760> liers in wait <0693> round

<05439> about Gibeah <01390>.

30  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> went <05927> up

against <0413> the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> on the

third <07992> day <03117>, and put themselves in array <06186>

against <0413> Gibeah <01390>, as at other times <06471>.

31  And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> went <03318>

out against <07125> the people <05971>, [and] were drawn <05423>

away from the city <05892>; and they began <02490> to smite

<05221> of the people <05971>, [and] kill <02491>, as at other

times <06471>, in the highways <04546>, of which <0834> one

<0259> goeth <05927> up to the house <01008> of God <01008>, and

the other <0259> to Gibeah <01390> in the field <07704>, about

thirty <07970> men <0376> of Israel <03478>.

32  And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> said <0559>,

They [are] smitten <05062> down before <06440> us, as at the

first <07223>. But the children <01121> of Israel <03478> said

<0559>, Let us flee <05127>, and draw <05423> them from the city

<05892> unto the highways <04546>.

33  And all <03605> the men <0376> of Israel <03478> rose

<06965> up out of their place <04725>, and put themselves in

array <06186> at Baaltamar <01193>: and the liers in wait <0693>

of Israel <03478> came <01518> forth <01518> out of their places

<04725>, [even] out of the meadows <04629> of Gibeah <01390>.

34  And there came <0935> against <05048> Gibeah <01390> ten

<06235> thousand <0505> chosen <0970> men <0376> out of all

<03605> Israel <03478>, and the battle <04421> was sore <03513>:

but they knew <03045> not that evil <07451> [was] near <05060>

them.

35  And the LORD <03068> smote <05062> Benjamin <01144> before

<06440> Israel <03478>: and the children <01121> of Israel

<03478> destroyed <07843> of the Benjamites <01145> that day

<03117> twenty <06242> and five <02568> thousand <0505> and an

hundred <03967> men <0376>: all <03605> these <0428> drew

<08025> the sword <02719>.

36  So the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> saw <07200>

that they were smitten <05062>: for the men <0376> of Israel

<03478> gave <05414> place <04725> to the Benjamites <01145>,

because <03588> they trusted <0982> unto the liers in wait

<0693> which <0834> they had set <07760> beside <0413> Gibeah

<01390>.

37  And the liers in wait <0693> hasted <02363>, and rushed

<06584> upon Gibeah <01390>; and the liers in wait <0693> drew

<04900> [themselves] along, and smote <05221> all <03605> the

city <05892> with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>.

38  Now there was an appointed <04150> sign between <05973> the

men <0376> of Israel <03478> and the liers in wait <0693>, that

they should make a great <07235> flame <04864> with smoke

<06227> rise <05927> up out of the city <05892>.

39  And when the men <0376> of Israel <03478> retired <02015>

in the battle <04421>, Benjamin <01144> began <02490> to smite

<05221> [and] kill <02491> of the men <0376> of Israel <03478>

about thirty <07970> persons <0376>: for they said <0559>,

Surely <0389> they are smitten <05062> down before <06440> us,

as [in] the first <07223> battle <04421>.

40  But when the flame <04864> began <02490> to arise <05927>

up out of the city <05892> with a pillar <05982> of smoke

<06227>, the Benjamites <01145> looked <06437> behind <0310>

them, and, behold <02009>, the flame <03632> of the city <05892>

ascended <05927> up to heaven <08064>.

41  And when the men <0376> of Israel <03478> turned <02015>

again, the men <0376> of Benjamin <01144> were amazed <0926>:

for they saw <07200> that evil <07451> was come <05060> upon

them.

42  Therefore they turned <06437> [their backs] before <06440>

the men <0376> of Israel <03478> unto the way <01870> of the

wilderness <04057>; but the battle <04421> overtook <01692> them;

and them which <0834> [came] out of the cities <05892> they

destroyed <07843> in the midst <08432> of them.

43  [Thus] they inclosed <03803> the Benjamites <01145> round

<03803> about <03803>, [and] chased <07291> them, [and] trode

<01869> them down with ease <04496> over <05227> against <05227>

Gibeah <01390> toward the sunrising.

44  And there fell <05307> of Benjamin <01144> eighteen

thousand <0505> men <0376>; all <03605> these <0428> [were] men

<0582> of valour <02428>.

45  And they turned <06437> and fled <05127> toward the

wilderness <04057> unto the rock <05553> of Rimmon <07417>: and

they gleaned <05953> of them in the highways <04546> five

<02568> thousand <0505> men <0376>; and pursued <01692> hard

after <0310> them unto Gidom <01440>, and slew <05221> two

thousand <0505> men <0376> of them.

46  So that all <03605> which fell <05307> that day <03117> of

Benjamin <01144> were twenty <06242> and five <02568> thousand

<0505> men <0376> that drew <08025> the sword <02719>; all

<03605> these <0428> [were] men <0582> of valour <02428>.

 47  But six <08337> hundred <03967> men <0376> turned <06437>

and fled <05127> to the wilderness <04057> unto the rock <05553>

Rimmon <07417>, and abode <03427> in the rock <05553> Rimmon

<07417> four <0702> months <02320>.

48  And the men <0376> of Israel <03478> turned <07725> again

<07725> upon the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144>, and smote

<05221> them with the edge <06310> of the sword <02719>, as well

<03190> the men <04974> of [every] city <05892>, as the beast

<0929>, and all <03605> that came <04672> to hand <04672>: also

they set <07971> on fire <0784> all <03605> the cities <05892>

that they came <04672> to.

Judges  21

 1. Now the men <0376> of Israel <03478> had sworn <07650> in

Mizpeh <04709>, saying <0559>, There shall not any <0376> of us

give <05414> his daughter <01323> unto Benjamin <01144> to wife

<0802>.

2  And the people <05971> came <0935> to the house <01008> of

God <01008>, and abode <03427> there <08033> till <05704> even

<06153> before <06440> God <0430>, and lifted <05375> up their

voices <06963>, and wept <01058> sore;

 3  And said <0559>, O LORD <03068> God <0430> of Israel <03478>,

why <04100> is this <02063> come <01961> to pass in Israel

<03478>, that there should be to day <03117> one <0259> tribe

<07626> lacking <06485> in Israel <03478>?

4  And it came <01961> to pass on the morrow <04279>, that the

people <05971> rose <07925> early <07925>, and built <01129>

there <08033> an altar <04196>, and offered <05927> burnt

<05930> offerings and peace <08002> offerings.

5  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> said <0559>, Who

<04310> [is there] among all <03605> the tribes <07626> of

Israel <03478> that came <05927> not up with the congregation

<06951> unto the LORD <03068>? For they had made a great <01419>

oath <07621> concerning him that came <05927> not up to the LORD

<03068> to Mizpeh <04709>, saying <0559>, He shall surely be put

to death <04191>.

6  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> repented <05162>

them for Benjamin <01144> their brother <0251>, and said <0559>,

There is one <0259> tribe <07626> cut <01438> off from Israel

<03478> this day <03117>.

7  How <04100> shall we do <06213> for wives <0802> for them

that remain <03498>, seeing <07200> we have sworn <07650> by the

LORD <03068> that we will not give <05414> them of our daughters

<01121> to wives <0802>?

8  And they said <0559>, What <04310> one <0259> [is there] of

the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478> that came <05927> not up to

Mizpeh <04709> to the LORD <03068>? And, behold <02009>, there

came <0935> none to the camp <04264> from Jabeshgilead to the

assembly <06951>.

9  For the people <05971> were numbered <06485>, and, behold

<02009>, [there were] none of the inhabitants <03427> of

Jabeshgilead there <08033>.

 10  And the congregation <05712> sent <07971> thither <08033>

twelve thousand <0505> men <0376> of the valiantest, and

commanded <06680> them, saying <0559>, Go <03212> and smite

<05221> the inhabitants <03427> of Jabeshgilead with the edge

<06310> of the sword <02719>, with the women <0802> and the

children <02945>.

11  And this <02063> [is] the thing <01697> that ye shall do

<06213>, Ye shall utterly destroy <02763> every <03605> male

<02145>, and every <03605> woman <0802> that hath lain by man

<02145>.

12  And they found <04672> among the inhabitants <03427> of

Jabeshgilead four <0702> hundred <03967> young <05291> virgins

<01330>, that had known <03045> no <03808> man <0376> by lying

<04904> with any male <02145>: and they brought <0935> them unto

the camp <04264> to Shiloh <07887>, which <0834> [is] in the

land <0776> of Canaan <03667>.

 13  And the whole <03605> congregation <05712> sent <07971>

[some] to speak <01696> to the children <01121> of Benjamin

<01144> that [were] in the rock <05553> Rimmon <07417>, and to

call <07121> peaceably <07965> unto them.

14  And Benjamin <01144> came <07725> again <07725> at that

time <06256>; and they gave <05414> them wives <0802> which

<0834> they had saved <02421> alive <02421> of the women <0802>

of Jabeshgilead: and yet so <03651> they sufficed <04672> them

not.

15  And the people <05971> repented <05162> them for Benjamin

<01144>, because <03588> that the LORD <03068> had made <06213>

a breach <06556> in the tribes <07626> of Israel <03478>.

 16. Then the elders <02205> of the congregation <05712> said

<0559>, How <04100> shall we do <06213> for wives <0802> for

them that remain <03498>, seeing <03588> the women <0802> are

destroyed <08045> out of Benjamin <01144>?

17  And they said <0559>, [There must be] an inheritance

<03425> for them that be escaped <06413> of Benjamin <01144>,

that a tribe <07626> be not destroyed <04229> out of Israel

<03478>.

18  Howbeit we may <03201> not give <05414> them wives <0802>

of our daughters <01121>: for the children <01121> of Israel

<03478> have sworn <07650>, saying <0559>, Cursed <0779> [be] he

that giveth <05414> a wife <0802> to Benjamin <01144>.

19  Then they said <0559>, Behold <02009>, [there is] a feast

<02282> of the LORD <03068> in Shiloh <07887> yearly <03117> [in

a place] which <0834> [is] on the north <06828> side of Bethel

<01008>, on the east side of the highway <04546> that goeth

<05927> up from Bethel <01008> to Shechem <07927>, and on the

south <05045> of Lebonah <03829>.

20  Therefore they commanded <06680> the children <01121> of

Benjamin <01144>, saying <0559>, Go <03212> and lie in wait

<0693> in the vineyards <03754>;

21  And see <07200>, and, behold <02009>, if <0518> the

daughters <01121> of Shiloh <07887> come <03318> out to dance

<02342> in dances <04246>, then come <03318> ye out of the

vineyards <03754>, and catch <02414> you every man <0376> his

wife <0802> of the daughters <01121> of Shiloh <07887>, and go

<01980> to the land <0776> of Benjamin <01144>.

22  And it shall be, when <03588> their fathers <01> or <0176>

their brethren <0251> come <0935> unto us to complain <07378>,

that we will say <0559> unto them, Be favourable <02603> unto

them for our sakes: because <03588> we reserved <03947> not to

each man <0376> his wife <0802> in the war <04421>: for ye did

not give <05414> unto them at this time <06256>, [that] ye

should be guilty <0816>.

23  And the children <01121> of Benjamin <01144> did <06213> so

<03651>, and took <05375> [them] wives <0802>, according to

their number <04557>, of them that danced <02342>, whom <0834>

they caught <01497>: and they went <03212> and returned <07725>

unto their inheritance <05159>, and repaired <01129> the cities

<05892>, and dwelt <03427> in them.

24  And the children <01121> of Israel <03478> departed <01980>

thence <08033> at that time, every man <0376> to his tribe

<07626> and to his family <04940>, and they went <03318> out

from thence <08033> every man <0376> to his inheritance <05159>.

25  In those <01992> days <03117> [there was] no <0369> king

<04428> in Israel <03478>: every man <0376> did <06213> [that

which was] right <03477> in his own eyes <05869>.
